The real nice ones yes, but a standard indicator (like the one pictured) is only good down to .0005. The crappiest mics out there are good to .0001. I'm not seeing the logic, I guess it's just faster with a DI...

it's possible that whatever information you've learned from books doesn't correlate exactly to what actually works for the hands on mechanic. for example, you have to separate accuracy and resolution when it comes to mic's and indicators. a given mic might only read to .001 (i have a couple of Starret's that way)but with great accuracy. an "experienced" user can read that mic to within .0001 the same goes for dial indicators. stretch guages like the one shown are far superior than using a given torque value for critical components like rod bolts.
