Normally no, but sometimes access to a certain bolt requires just a bit of movement….

you're probably going to have to tip the motor to get at the top bolts and to clear the firewall so you will need to decide how much twist your motor mounts can handle.

running up my post count some more .

No you don't HAVE to loosen them but it wouldn't hurt to have a little slack on them so I do remove the two lower long bolts through them, up don't forget to put them back in when buttoning up the work when your done wrench up
I do put a short piece of 2x4 soft wood in between the oil pan and the steering drag link and oil pan between the idler arm and the steering box arm to support the middle of the motor while the trans is out wrench up

A bunch. Best bet is drop the pan to drain the fluid where you can keep the mess small.

^^^ That, and pop a plastic/styrofoam cup or a tie-wrapped baggie over the output.

I would put a oil drain catch pan under the drain plug on the tail shaft housing and drain the tail shaft before pulling the trans up scope wrench twocents

Like stated more grunt on bolt but use spray on threads. In a small block car when titling motor make sure you do not ruin the distibuter

Pull the 2 bolts that attach the mount to the trans and drop the crossmember out.
