Hi Everybody,

It's been quite awhile since I posted here last and I'm sorry, but I'm trying to help out my stepdad. He recently bought a 2008 Chrysler Sebring with a 3.5 liter with only 118,000 miles on it, however it has a problem with throwing an engine code for a cam position sensor. It starts up with the code off but when we start driving it, the code comes back on. A new sensor was in it when we got it, then we put another new one in it and its still on. Any ideas of what it could be? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance up

That 3.5 uses a timing belt, do you know the last time the belt was replaced? If there is a lot of slack in the belt it can throw off the cam/crank timing. It also could be 1or2 teeth off! I would also check/reset the cam/crank sync. using a scan tool.

2 different replacement cam position sensors in my '96 Breeze, both did the same thing; didn't affect the way the car ran, but would throw a code from time to time.
1st replacement went in a while after a timing belt replacement, when original one threw a code.
1st sensor was NAPA, 2nd was MoPar.
Cam sensor code apparently can actually be a bad signal from crank sensor, or a bad connection/junction.
If it gets bad enough, there's an Auto Shutoff in the PCM (at least in the Breeze) that should kill the engine before things get fatal.

I don’t think ever, but we took it off and we got that and other parts on the way

I've had a couple of those 3.5s. Great little engines but yep...they need a belt at 100k. I lost one belt at 102k...lol. Look close at the water pump and the tensioner while you're in there. Get it up and running...if it still sets a code please tell us which exact code.....saying it "throws a code for the cam sensor" isn't helpful as there are likely multiple codes dealing with cam sensor(s).

i did the belt, water pump, and tensioners in my wife's concorde with a 3.5 at 104k [and change]
i was surprised to find the original belt "looked" fine, but one of the tensioners [the only one ? i really forget] was starting to get a roughness in the bearing.
i think i got it just in time.
and for whatever it's worth, this car was a long trip, maintenance done as required, not beat on, vehicle.
beer

Like Topside said "Cam sensor code apparently can actually be a bad signal from crank sensor, or a bad connection/junction. STAR would recommend that with cam sensor back in the day.

Well,

The timing belt, tensioner, pulley and water pump were replaced BUT unfortunately the light is still on. It does have a code called “cam position sensor intermittent” if that helps any. However we’re thinking it maybe an electrical issue……. Any ideas?

This is the code it throws in my picture here. My stepdad replaced the crank sensor today and the light still comes on too

Did you try to resync the cam and crank sensor using a scan tool? I would also check the camshaft tone ring for issues as well, next step would be to verify the wiring from the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor to the pcm wiggling the wiring harness while watching your omh meter.
