RUMBLON OP master Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 9,857 Cambridge Idaho	Seems this belongs here. I have been out of the game a fast ten years building a ranch in Idaho. Sold my cars and Cuda vert to pay for my out of pocket home build too. I have a 63 Sport fury vert I’m considering building and debating a modern Hemi VS a 383 or 440 stroker. My last few kits were 440source but I recall hearing their quality dropped? Plus after 10 years I’m sure there are new suppliers ect ???

Cab_Burge I Win C Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 43,173 Bend,OR USA	Try Ohio Crankshaft company for you parts, they make good stuff here in America I make my own kits using their crank and rods and either Ross or United Machine Icon forged pistons, AKA as KB, pistons /If your wanting to build a motor with some power and want to rev it up regularly look for a 400 block instead of the 383 or 440 blocks, they both have real thin main webbing that will crack under medium to heavy duty use, the 400 blocks live a lot longer Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

rebel master Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 4,647 aotearoa	As Cab says, the 400 block is your winner. I have a 512 & a 455 stroker 400, both are as good as each other although I rev the the 455 higher. If you go past 470 cubes you'll want to consider max wedge ports if you want to make real power, but a 500+ cube std port would make a zippy street car, just the top end will be lacking, but how often are you going to be maxed out on your rpm? I don't use Source parts, im a believer that you don't skimp on the spinning bits, if they fail, the costs are astronomical & it would have been cheaper to have bought real quality in the first place. I also agree that the 400 is the best block to start with. As far as new hemi engines go, they are great but I feel it takes away some of the cars soul so to speak.

fbs63 top fuel F Joined: Nov 2003 Posts: 1,839 NW Indiana	Like any engine combo it all depends on your goals for it. A 451-499 with a 6.760 rod is a stout street-strip engine with a STD port head. My opinion on the 496-512 is the shorter rod requires a max wedge or B1 size intake port. Also 1.6-1.7 rockers and an aggressive intake lobe. Without getting into to much the piston in these combos moves away from TDC FAST and it needs plenty of flow volume available when it does. STD port heads and a larger than needed cam grind can crutch this but the engine will not reach is power potential without enough port AND intake volume. Some calculations on Larry Meax's software is eye opening.

AndyF I Win A Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 31,030 Oregon	For a street car I'd go with the 4.25 inch stroke crankshaft regardless of the block. The 400 is probably the best block to use followed by the 440 and then the 383. Any will work, but the 400 gives you a very nice combination of power and size. The 440 block might make it a little easier to find headers and intakes and stuff like that so if you have a good 440 block I'd use it. 500 inches with the 4.25 crank and a set of good aluminum heads will give you plenty of street power, even with a smallish street friendly cam. We build these engines all the time and depending on which heads and cam you pick you can see up to 600 ft-lbs of torque and between 500 to 600 hp.

We've had ours since 2016 and they have been awesome! 4.25 stroke, 2.20 rods and 7.1" long rods (440 RB). I like to think I torture test stuff more thoroughly than most people what with all the hard street miles and drag strip passes we make with a big, heavy car and lots of spray. '63 Dodge 330 11.19 @ 121 mph Pump gas, n/a, through the mufflers on street tires with 3.54's. 3,600 lbs. 10.01 @ 133mph with a 250 shot of nitrous an a splash of race gas. 1.36 60 ft. 3,700 lbs.

I built a very mild 400 based 512 stroked motor back in 2018 and have been very pleased with it. I would probably give a 6.4 G3 a lot more thought now. Cast parts and O-ring gaskets. Made 600 ft-lbs of torque and 550 hp. Very simple build, most of the parts come from Summit. No trick machine work, just do the basics and double check everything. Goes right together without any issues.

I think it was 236/244 but I'm not 100% sure anymore. It wasn't the "perfect" cam for the engine, but cores were hard to find so the customer bought a cam that he found on the shelf. It worked pretty good for what it was.

If you are going to build a serious race engine then I'd buy the best parts you can and piece them together. For a street engine one of the kits is the best deal providing that you can find one that gives you the correct compression ratio with the heads you are going to run.

What suppliers do you recommend checking out for a 4.25 inch stroke kit for 440 for a fun fast street car? What brand crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings do you use?
