We (Kevins440) are going to put together another 493 shortblock for the Bounty Hunters Dodge. Filled stock block, aftermarket steel main caps, maybe a girdle (clearance issues with center link if we don't raise the engine slightly; need a new motor plate if we do), flat-top pistons for 12-1 compression with 440-1 heads. Should I buy a kit from Scat, 440 Source, Eagle, or piece together an assembly using a Scat crank, Manley rods, JE pistons? Any suggestions if I piece together a kit or what should I look out for in the preassembled kits?

at 700 horses i'd go with the Source kit. their cranks are actually stronger than an Eagle( paid good money to have this checked). the sources KB pistons will put you right on the money for the 12;1 comp ratio. the only drawback is having to radius your bearings to make them fit but once done everything will be fine.

No need to radius the bearings if you buy the right ones. I have a 440Source crank in my 505 and the bearings fit fine right out of the box.

I think its only the main bearings in a b-block you have to bevel. As the limited main bearing choices.

Muscle Motors also offer very good prices like 440 source. Very good customer service. I bought one from them and they were very helful with everything. My combo made 761hp and it works great no problems at all!!

Don't mean to start one of those 'internet pissing matches', but I can tell ya' that the Source cranks don't always work without chamfering the bearings just because you use the narrow ones (Clevite 743HN - what they provided in my kit).

Unless you're using something else - if so, please share the info; I'll be happy to install a different part if it's a 'drop in' whenever I freshen the motor!

Seduce the attractive, and charm the rest. ****** 489 C.I.D., roller cam, aftermarket heads, tunnel ram, stock '54 Dodge rear axle assembly: which of these doesn't belong?

what are the right bearings andy? i have a B engine & have to chamfer both the mains & the rods to fit mine. luckily i've done this a few times now & generally get the right amount of bevel first time, but it still takes time getting it right.

We have been running that engine since 05 440source kit 493" 440-1 heads with only a little cleaning no port work, 12-1 comp. flat tappet cam etc. Best so far was 9.96 @ 134 in a 3500lb brick. 440source kit dropped in with no work on the crank or bearings and has been hammered on just about every week.
