Better do some reading. As I recall there were lots of people with overheating problems with that housing. I would not use it.

I thought I remember reading that the overheating issue was traced back to the pumps...not the housings.

There were housings that had the restriction's. It was an internal problem on one port as I recall. They may of been from 440 source.

This is the housing. Note the rather square passage areas. Inside the holes are about the size of a dime or nickel on the bottom ports.

My 440 Source aluminum housing works just fine on my 440. Purchased around 2006. I do use a flowkooler pump.

The restrictions are way inside and can't be photographed. Actually better felt than seen.

Can you reach inside it to "port it"? If you were going to toss it anyway, why not see if you can open up the ports?

Is that a 440 source housing?

I have one, I was going to try and cut off an external portion of the housing and re-weld / re-build it back so as to have bigger passages.

Don't know if I can avoid warping. I thought about using Marine Tex instead of welding. Might work with a zero pressure cooling system.

Bought at a swap meet I don't know who made it. but it fits the description in the "Housing Discussion". And, as such, it was a mistake. The restricted area is back in several inched and I may try to get a cutter in there, but, that will wait for the time being.

There was a good aluminum pump on it and I couldn't see in there with it in place. I had forgot about this "known problem" when I picked it up, but upon pump removal, saw the "mistake". Thanks for the info, and especially the link to the previous discussion.

Here's a thread here on Moparts with pics that I took showing where the restriction is.

As much as anyone thinks the passages in the 440 source pump may be small and restrictive, they are simply not an issue. There simply isn't enough water flow to make a difference. This is not like comparing intake ports on a head.

The pump impellor type and clearance to the back wall are probably bigger contributing factors to the pump and cooling efficiency considering this is a non-positive displacement centrifugal pump.
