Hi All,

I was wondering if someone could take a look at this ring and pinion pattern and let me know what you think? I have patters for both .030 pinion shim and .025 pinion shim. Both backlash was set to .006 to .010.

Thanks in advance!
Tim

IMHO, I would try a .033-.035 shim. The drive side could be closer to the 'toe' on the drive side, which should bring your coast side more towards the middle of the tooth.

wave Hi Tim , I like the .030 shim for BOTH your coast and drive patterns pictures . Plus the base 489 pinion shim to start with IS a .030 , if thats what you are working on . A 742 you usually start with a .090 shim . drive Ronnie

Do you have a combo that you could come up with .033 shim pack ? If not then I like the .030 pattern twocents

Okay, got it all buttoned up. About 18-19 in/lbs pinion turning torque.

Does 29-30 in/lb turning torque with the center section fully assembled sound right? I'm right at .006-.007" backlash.

Sounds about right for a 742 case but a 489 should have a little less pre load than that. I'm not sure why though shruggy

Apologies, i meant .006 - .007 backlash not preload.
