BDW OP master Joined: May 2005 Posts: 4,733 Florida	It looks like my hot water heater is leaking at the connection to the house. 2 questions: 1) Tank is 17yrs old, should I bite the bullet and spend the $500 to replace it myself, or just fix this connector? 2) What kind of connection is it, it's PVC with no give, so how would I remove and replace it?

Who ever did the install 17 years ago cheaped out just straight-piping it like that. BDW OP master Joined: May 2005 Posts: 4,733 Florida	Well, "them" is me.........I'll be doing the work. So how do I replace what,looks like rigid CPVC, that doesn't appear to have any give? Cut off everything there and use flex lines? Spoon feed me, the electric not an issue, need to know how to handle the piping.

I would replace it, but if it is working just change the fitting. Cut the horizontal pipe near the elbow unscrew the fitting from the water heater. use a thread pipe to sharkbite fitting back on the water heater. Use teflon tape with a little pipe dope over it on the threads. stick in a length of cpvc gauge where the new sharkbite elbow goes by the height of the horizontal pipe. Allow length to insert into shark bite elbow insert length of cpvc into horizontal part of elbow trim horizontal cpvc to length allowing for insert into the shark bite repair union to connect to the horizontal pipe (It is a fitting that allows you to slip it on and the into the other fitting) (Google shark bite repair union)

All you need is a shut off of the cold to the tank. Once that's shut off there's no hot water pressure to the house.

I'm not saying a valve on the hot side is a a bad idea, just very unnecessary.

The tank should have two 3/4” male nipples sticking out of the top. They make two types of flexible lines. I use stainless steel flex lines with female ends on both ends. On the hot side, just cut off the cpvc coming out of the wall and glue a 3/4” male adapter to iron pipe fitting. Install the flex line with two female iron pipe ends and your fixed. On the cold side, you need a cutoff. I don’t see one in the picture. I’d glue on another male adapter and install a 3/4” brass ball valve on the pipe coming out of the wall. Put in a 3/4 x 2” brass nipple in the out side of the ball valve. Now you can install the same flex line with two female ends on it as well. Don’t over tighten the lines. They have thick rubber washers inside. The fittings compress the rubber to seal. It does not seal on the threads. Cpvc uses special glue. Let it set up for a couple of hours before you apply pressure to the system. Hope this helps.

Everyone uses Pex now. It’s flexible, cheaper than copper and you don’t have to hire a security guard to watch your building site after hours because thieves take it before the slab gets poured.

An issue I ran into when I replaced an OLD unit is that the new units are bigger around due to increased insulation. The new unit worked just fine, but other mods had to be done because of the size increase. John The dream is dead, long live the dream.......😥

I cook with gas also, approx 28 year old stove....$14 a month and $9 is the service charge. Heat with gas with 30 year old furnace, total bill in the coldest of winter $55. Id fix it. I get calls all the time about upgrades to my gas appliances from my gas company but yet every month they send out usage reports vs 100 close neighbors... im always in the top 5%. A fluke, luck...who knows. STOP POTATO HATE!

It most cases, the changes are much easier to perform during the replacement as compared to once the unit is installed or further down the road if an inspection (e.g. home sale) reveals a deficiency.
