It starts and runs but I can not control the engine speed and then it dies again, Do you mean it idles for a moment then dies? Or that it will idle until you try to open the throttle? Or that the rpms are all over and then it dies? I was driving my 2004 Durango down the street, slowed to turn left at a light and it coughed and stalled. I coasted around the turn, popped it in neutral and cranked it back up but it was running rough and smoking under the hood. The big and small ends of #6 rod got divorced, and the remainder of the big end windowed both sides of the block above the pan rail. Still ran and didn't leak a drop of coolant... First step on an '04 should be to check for codes.

The 2004 to 2006 Durango's have a problem that after they get about 100k+ on them that the intake o-rings/gaskets don't seal properly and the water comes down off the cowl and drops right on the intake. It seeps past the intake o-rings and part way fills the cylinder and it hydraulic locks it and snaps the powder forged connecting rods. It's a common problem on them if you do an internet search. I bought a really nice 2004 Durango Limited with a rod through the block that idled smooth and ran okay with one rod blown through the block. I engine swapped it and it's now the wife's daily driver.
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Check engine light on? Pull the codes. This. Check for DTC codes.

Heck, that was 2015 and I don't remember. I swapped the in a used motor and ran it another 80k before the frame rotted out above the trailer hitch last year...

wiring issues of all kinds will test your patience, and make you go bald ! the bad part of this is, the issue could be anywhere, under the hood or in the cab. as has been said, a scan is the first thing to do, then you will go from there. please keep us up to date as to your progress.

This is going to sound out there, but have the battery tested. It may have enough to crank and start, but the voltage can drop low enough to cause the ecm to re-set. I've seen it before. Corroded terminals, or anything that can cause a voltage drop will cause the same thing. Good luck This is true. In 2006 when I was shopping for a new truck, I saw a nice new one on a lot where it sat long enough to let the battery go flat. They jump started it but it ran rough and would barely move. Friday, I retrieved a long dormant 2004 Toyota. I had to jump start it. I had no spare batteries around to swap in so I jump started and drove it. After 3 miles, the gauges started flickering and the engine stalled. Subsequent restarts were met with a gas pedal that now does nothing. The code reader determined a dead throttle position sensor. I suspect that running it with the alternator providing all the power somehow damaged the electronic speed sensor in the gas pedal assembly.

I suspect it's in limp mode until you replace the battery and clear codes. Referring to the Toyota. No electrical diagnosis, including driveability, codes, etc., starts until the vehicle has a battery that has a SOC of 75% or better and a properly operating charging system. In fact, the charging system should not be diagnosed until there's a good battery installed. Always, always, always start with the battery before following any electrical/electronic pinpoint testing. Without a proper battery analysis you're wasting time effort and money. You're battery analysis includes cables and connections, same for charging system.

Turn key on and off three times, ending in on. The codes will show in the odometer area.
