I have a virgin 68-70 (440HP) block that some idiot at a junkyard ripped out with a high lift and tore the engine mount off. It tore a hole in the block. I was going to scab a plate on it and pour the block full of cement. If it could get you up and running for awhile it’s all yours. I’m about 35 miles NE of pittsburgh.

At least it wasn't like that famous black and white photo from the 60's of the Fiat Topolino where it was shot when the crank etc had just landed on the ground.

Been there Brother! That's a sick feeling.

How many runs on the motor?

Let us know what you find when you get it apart

Motor is out. Pan is off. Its a Mega block. I've put 750 passes on the block. Rotating assy was replaced around 300 passes ago. Actually the cylinder isn't blasted apart. It did crack the side thru the dipstick hole into the #2 cross bolt hole. Broke the #3 main cross bolt. #3 rod is broken. #4 rod is nicked up.. #3 and 4 pistons are done. Cam and lifters look OK at 1st glance. Pan can be repaired. Heads and valvetrain will come of tomorrow.

Dam - that was always a solid motor - seems they always run the best before something goes horribly wrong - hopefully you can save the block and nothing hurt the heads!

The rod failure was caused by the bearing locking on the crank.

While Russ likes hearing his diaper did what it was supposed to.... he’d prefer nobody ever had to supply that data.

Sucks happening so early in the season.... hope you can find parts in a timely manner. That seems to be a struggle these days.

I have 4 Billet Oliver rods 7.10 length, that could find a new home, if needed. Why I was wondering.

That freaking blows. I have a policy of if it slows a few hundredths, then a few more, and I cant figure out why, it goes in the trailer, because I have seen too many windowed blocks from that happening over the years if you keep on running them. hammer

All apart today. I never dreamed it had an internal issue or I would've cut the filter open. As they say spend and learn. not sure yet on the crank. enough shrapnel means new pistons and rods. now I'll have about 3 spares of each that are untouched. All the rest of the bearings look fine. Have a line on a Mega block that needs sleeves. We'll see tomorrow.

I had a big block on the dyno a few years back that ate a rod bearing and took out the whole engine during a dyno pull. The oil pressure was good the whole time but power started to drop and by the time we shut the engine off the rod bearing was torched and the engine was full of garbage. Never did figure out the issue but it had to be something off just a hair on that one cylinder since everything else looked good just like your engine. Could've been a slightly tighter bearing on that one hole or maybe some casting flash in the passage to that bearing or something along those lines.

Sucks to see this Doug!

That is almost exactly what happened to me this past July... Not a good feeling.

I know you will have it back together quick and better then before.

Sorry to see this Doug! Lucky it wasn't bad enough to cause a crash. Hope you get it fixed up soon and get that 8!

Update; Block is being welded. The cracks aren't structural or into water. The #3 cylinder is getting sleeved. Machine work; bore to 4.530" (due to ring size availability) deck, line hone, valve job, skim cut heads, balance. New parts; crank and rods (Molnar), pistons (Ross), rings, bearings (Clevite), oil pump (Melling), valves (Ferrea), valve locks and springs (Pac), dampner (ATI). The cam, valve train all survived well. Pan has been straightened out and is ready to weld. The Fluidampner was cracked and leaking. All the reusable parts are cleaned and stored. Biggest holdup is pistons, 6-7 weeks. I was going to paint the outside of my house and shop this Summer. So soon I'll be at it. Hope to get the hood painted and some touch up as well while I'm waiting. Fortunately I've been hustling jobs out of the garage for the last couple of years to establish a fund to support my race habit. The fund just got smaller.

I hope your pistons get to you on time. I've been waiting on a set for a 440" SBC for over 2 months now. Ship time keeps getting bumped.
Have another set I need to order in the next day or two for a 489" BBC...guess that one will be on hold for a while also.
