Good Afternoon All
I am going to install a 426 Hemi into a 67 Coronet convertible now under restoration (I believe it is a 66 casting, have to check again). I intend to only put a single 4 bbl carb on it as it is for street / cruising only. I have been told that the Demon 850 cfm would be the best for this application. Would that be a good choice or are there other options?

Thanks for the help.

Don't get an off the shelf carb. They are generic. Get something tuned more for your particular combo.

Why castrate a thoroughbred stallion? The factory dual quad is the perfect street cruising setup for a Hemi. Idle, torque, midrange, awesome top end pull, super easy and reliable, and good mpg. Don't believe all the lies about them being finicky. And they look cool like a Hemi ought'a!

I just looked up the dual carb setup. A manifold and gas lines are a little over $500 (not bad). But I can't afford the $3000 to $4000 they want for 2 carbs. So I will stay with a single carb until I can afford a new dual carb setup.

something like an edelbrock 1405 is identical in throttle bore/venturi to a stock carb. the chrome dome breather base won't fit but inexpensive small air filters are out there.

Guys like Scott Smith take modern Carters and modify them to work / replicate the original dual carb sets up at a much less money outlay.

There is a air cleaner base made to fit the modern carb throats as well.

Several options to appear stock regardless of the carb choice you go with

Just depends on what parts you have on hand and what the budget is. A single 4 bbl is going to be the least expensive option and it will work just fine for a street car. Mopar had a dual plane intake that they used on the crate Hemi that works pretty well. An 850 carb would work fine for a street car. Do you know which air cleaner you want to run? Hemi air cleaners can be expensive to buy. You'll also need to figure out which hood you are using and if you have a scoop or not. Some Hemi intakes won't fit under a stock flat hood and some air cleaners won't work with various fresh air hoods. Figure out how much space you have and then look in your check book to see how much money you have and go from there.

I have a set of Clone carb that are based on orig 9500 Carter AFB with hemi linkage for sale, had them posted in the for sale section. Test ran them on my 477 Hemi, and performed fine. They are show quality. Can contact me if interest. Half the cost of originals and I have the linkage included.

Well if my buddy don’t act soon (he wants them) i have a 69 intake two eldebrocks that’s been setup to run on that intake and a factory round air cleaner that I modified to fit those big throat carbs for $2000

Are you responding to my PM? By the way my clones have Chrysler correct tops so they fit OEM original Air Cleaner. No need for a new air cleaner.

Leave those carbs for the resto guys.

A new set of Edelbrock 650 AVS Thunders will get the job done.

Banning put a set on a 572 street Hemi and it made over 770 HP.

If you are going to go single 4bbl I would go 950cfm.

My mate runs one on his 512ci motor and still gets 16 to the gallon...
Runs quite good down the strip too lol... drive

I'm gonna do the same but with TWO turbo's, through a single Blow through and dual plane. ozbbq panic

Thanks for all of the input. I am debating on the single or dual carb setup still. I still have to finish the restoration that is in progress and trying to determine how much it will cost to finish (drive train, convertible top replace, chrome trim). If I can get a better handle final cost that will help me determine if I can afford the dual quad setup. The engine already has the single carb intake on it so I would have to replace all of that.

Great Forum! up

Me personally. If it already has the single 4 intake on it
And as long as its not a factory hemi car.

I would run it with a single 4 and get the repop air cleaner that fits it.

If you already have the single carb intake then I'd just use that for now. You can always upgrade to full on show poodle with the super expensive carbs that don't work down the road. I helped with a dyno test a while back where the guy wanted a perfect "all original" Hemi run on the dyno. He had numbers matching carbs that had been restored by "the guy". The thing ran like poo. We switched over to a pair of Edelbrock carbs and it ran great. Just think how bummed out you would be if you spend $5000 for all the correct parts and then it wouldn't get out of its own way.

Ok, so now who can just swap stuff and make up stuff to get the result you want to post. Nice to hear, but I have seen a lot of cars run great with original carbs done right. You should know better. Your making a blanket statement all orig hemi carbs are bad??? Yes orig hemi stuff seems to be expensive but it can be had at reasonable prices too. Lot of folks with restored carters and holleys that perform great, but sure there could be a bad carb worn beyond repair. Why didn't you just fix his carb. Who was "the guy"?
