Not sure how far dorn the pistons were, they are sealed power forged flat tops that I got back in the 1980's? I used the 0.050" rebuild typr Fel-Pro gasket, and milled the heads 0.040".. The cam was a Crower Compu-pro with around 0.500+ lift. The problem is I acidently missed 2nd gear on a down shift and hit first gear (transmission had the shift kit that allows 1st gear at any speed, big mistake there) so the engine spun to around 8,000 RPM?, and I only had the single valve springs springs and floated the valves, managed to just tweek the intake valve to where they din't seal good.

just picked up a new engine masters.. heheh but anyway, they did a mild 383, milled the block down so the kb flat tops they had were at zero deck and they ran stock 906 heads at 9.2:1 cr they used an m1, an 850 speed demon, comp xe 285hl grind.. not sure how street friendly it would be, and a set of hooker super comp headers and claim 454hp 456tq. dose that sound realistic? if so it seems pretty easy to make power with these engines, i feel like im missing something.
That looks like the article that has been posted in other threads from back in about 2002, if it is I call foul on the stated HP #'s since it was dynoed at WESTECH and it was later reported the DYNO was giving out inflated numbers , which are great to sell magazines .
That KB piston is .024 in the hole on a factory blueprint deck , it's SILLY to remove that much off the deck of a block , nevermind the CANYON of a valve relief that piston has , that's the WORST piston anyone could use to build a 383 . Diamond makes a nice piston , too bad the CH is TOO SHORT and it's almost as useless a piston as the KB , the saving grace is it has a more realistic valve relief .

all 383's had a forged crank.
EXCEPT for the 71 383-2bbl ...
John,
There is a note in the 70-71 parts book (page 9-1 note 2) stating a 383 2bbl could have either a cast or forged crank. It goes on to describe how to determine which crank came with the block. (Letter E on pad, balancer, etc)
Thanks Doug , my interest/knowledge in the 383 sort of stops at the end of the 69 model year
Yep, have had a couple 71 cast crank 383's. Pretty much the start of the 400 auto cast crank.

Mine is pushing 400/430 with some worked over 516's, the aforementioned kb 162 pistons, and Comps version of the MP .474 cam (233/240 @ 0.050 w/ .474 lift), Holley SD intake and a mighty Demon 650. There's more there if I had a beefier cam I think and maybe more carb. Decent street motor.
I find it hard to believe the 906's could just bolt on with that compression. Mine is calced to 9.2:1 and I know it works because I built my 383 before with the 906 heads and it ran like crud. the darned thing had 7.8:1 compression!
If I could do it again i would definately get better pistons if I could.
