I think the 71 had a cast crank. It'd work for your intended app.

Yes, forged crank. My only attempt at rebuilding my '71 383 had so/so results. My first mistake was using the replacement flat top pistons which did not have valve reliefs. Because the 383 (and 400) have a fairly large bore and short stroke it is very important to keep track of the chamber volume or the compression will drop quickly with any additional chamber volume/head gasket thickness/deck height. I think I may have only had a bit over 8:1 compression? My second mistake was using a cam that was a total compromise. It was just a bit too big for my low compression, so I killed alot of low end torque, but the cam was a bit mild to make good top end power. The killer was the car had a stock torque converter. A higher stall converter would have helped cover up the lack of low end torque, but having higher compression ratio would also have helped. Anyhow, back to the pistons... Since they did not have valve notches I could not easely install a larger cam, or advance the cam I had. Anyhow, short story, I built the 451 stroked 400 and the 383 is still setting on an engine stand in the corner of the garage minus the ported 906 heads that I sold to a friend for his 440.
The KB #162 piston with a 0.040" head gasket and 84cc heads only get the compression ratio to about 8.5:1. The KB #400 domed (-6cc) pistons would make about 9.5:1 compression with the same 84cc heads and 0.040" head gasket.

Budget?
stroke it! I've got what is basically a 440 stuffed into a 383 block, and made 505 hp, 535 tq on the engine dyno, with an otherwise, mild build.
10.5 compression eddy heads RPM intake holly 750HP comp xe275hl hydraulic flat tappet cam
torque curve was pretty much flat at 500 from 3000 rpm through 5800, with the peak of 535 at 3600.
if you have a good solid complete 383, the build could be done for $3500-$4000 plus machine costs...all depends on what you already have available, and what you can find by shopping around for good deals on used stuff

I know i'm going to get flamed here, but if your just looking for a mild build i would get a set of 516 close chamber heads nice v/j open up the bowls and install 1.74 exhaust valves, get a set of flat tops and zero deck, this should put you right around 9.2 to 9.5cr, and a good .039 quench with the felpros to boot. then keep the cam in the 218 to 224 @.050 range. I know plenty of guys running 516 heads in the high 11's and 12's. so they will flow plenty for a mild 383.
Mike I would do basically the same thing , but I think the 71 383 HP had a lower compression rating ( closer to what it actually may be??) , piston is a little deeper in the hole and I think a composite felpro would make the quench distance larger than .039

all 383's had a forged crank.
EXCEPT for the 71 383-2bbl ...
John,
There is a note in the 70-71 parts book (page 9-1 note 2) stating a 383 2bbl could have either a cast or forged crank. It goes on to describe how to determine which crank came with the block. (Letter E on pad, balancer, etc)
Seeking:
1969 St. Louis plant VINs, SPD, and VONs. Over 2,000 thanks to you!

Thanks Doug , my interest/knowledge in the 383 sort of stops at the end of the 69 model year

anyone know what heads the hp motor came with in 71? where would be a good place to find the 516 heads?
Mine, from a '71 Newport, has 346 heads and has a forged crank. When I had the heads off I used a feeler gauge to check how far in the hole the pistons were. Measured a snug 0.020 in the hole, flat top pistons, no valve reliefs.

68-69 pistons are .003 in the hole 4bbl or 2 bbl , the 2bbl also has a dish , are the 2bbls dished in 71 ?

Had a nice mild 383 with open chamber heads. It was a 70 block with stock pistons and the 452 heads were milled about .070 to get 9.5 comp with the .020 steel head gaskets. I used the MP .484 cam on a 104 centerline. The 452 heads had some mild pocket porting done on them but that was it. Had a Performer RPM intake with a 750 DP. Used CPPA 2" headers and a TA 10" tight 3000 converter. With 3.91's in my sons 3575 lb Dart (with him in it) it ran as fast as 12.31 @ 110. Ron

The '71 should have has 346 heads. I don't think I mentioned why they were not on my engine... I over-reved the 383 (rember pistons with no valve reliefs), and bent two intake valves
The '71 Charger 500 in my user photo was an original numbers matching 383HP 4-bbl car, and it had the 383 I described in it before I installed the 451 stroker.

did you deck the block to zero the pistons ? how big was the lift of the cam ??? Replacement 383 pistons are at best .015 in the hole .
