Hydraulic flat tappet XE 268 224 @.050. with the correct springs and using GM EOS additive.

I've been hearing more bad things about CompCams and wanted to know if it was possible to continue to drive and NOT know if a cam had been wiped? If not, what signs/sounds would one expect to watch for in order to have a better idea?

Last question, what's the best hydraulic flat tappet brand available? Crower? Thanks.....

The rocker arm will start making a tapping noise and it should be noticable. You will also pick up a miss.

The miss will be there steady. If the valve isn't moving that cylinder won't fire right.

Yes you will have an irritating miss and a tick that will drive you nuts...This is from when it happened to me.

What springs are in it? Singles, or doubles? Why are you asking. like what is it doing different?

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I wiped a lobe on a MP cam one time. It didn't miss, it just sounded 'funny'. In fact my Dad picked it up that it sounded 'funny'. Sure enough, one exhaust lobe looked like the fuel pump eccentric.

This is a backyard test, disconnect the coil wire and ground it. Then crank the engine over. If the speed and sound is steady, chances are all the cylinders are behaving equally. If the starter changes tone every two revolutions, then you have problems with one cylinder. More changes, more cylinders.

Sometimes, they won't even tick, so you can try driving it with air cleaner removed, and once you open the throttle but good it may sound like a wild popcorn popper, that would be a sign of possible wiped lobe.

That is most likely timming.

Build another, in an upturned side turvey economy, where are all the old antique....historic more like it, mopars ? unfinished projects aren't easy finds anymore.

The given ups, went to the crusher. M 71 4 speed 4 door has rust through above both leaf perches, body shop wants way too much to fix. Its days are numbered with crappy patches. I have some wood up front for floors.

OOOh boy; you guys got me worried now; I have a 318 that I put a stock-replacement 360 cam and lifters into ~1600 miles ago; I have what sounds like (1) lifter that ticks and drives me NUTS; but the motor continues to run great! I have a buddy with a same year Shivvy 3/4 ton (350--yuck) and that one has the popcorn popper syndrome; (orig cam in his) but I also keep hearing that I need 0.025" longer pushrods than I used (Mag head conversion @ same time as the cam swap; I used MP 7.625s) and upon pulling the valve cover I can spin most of the pushrods easily between my fingers (any that the valves are not currently off their seats) but I havn't had teh chance to get over and order the 7.650s. Theres a 351W Furd app thats supposed to be 7.635 that I, wondering if will "shut my motor up"

I chased a exhast leak thinking it was a lifter tap

after new PR,rockers and shafts
then new lifters and a cam swap

turned out to be a pitted flange on the DS header, some copper rtv and no more ticking

after a few it was back

new headers and copper rtv and have not heard it yet

I just hate the sound of a ferd PR going in a mopar

I just hope its not going to be too long, but you will have shorter ones to put back in I guess

Yeah I know the feeling about a Furd part in a Mopar; but as far as my tick, it was there with the manifolds and is there still, same intensity, now that I have Hooker Super Comps and true duals (new at that) on there.
The Furd PR's are only 0.010" longer than the MP conversion ones. The COMP ones that some say they wind up using in these apps is 0.025" longer than the MP conversion ones. so no I dont believe the Furd ones would be TOO long but I do hear of them working out for some people.

I have already WAAAAY too much in this swap (buying Magnum heads, machine shop time and materials to find out I had piles of scrap, then finally buying a set of EQ Magnum heads) and cringe at the thought of having to get another cam+lifters right now, (I am on disability) but an out of the book standard part (whatever it actually is listed for) will be more affordable than the ones from COMP that "everyone" says they wind up using. If this cam does turn out as bad, screw it, the orig 318 cam is going back in, although I will still have to buy another set of lifters (threw the orig ones out, didnt have the hole in them for thru thr pushrod oiling; that was the WHOLE reason I decided to put a whole cam in the old "might as well" thing; new lifters new t/chain set, aso why not a cam too?

My kids old truck had 1 lobe that was completely gone and at least 2 or 3 that were pretty much worn on his 318.It never clattered and didnt run bad.Just never idled smooth and didnt have a lot of pickup.I couldnt believe the cam was that bad when we pulled it.Rocky

Go with the Comp Cams 7.65" pushrods. With those rods, the lifter is pushed into the lifter .050" on my engine. From what I've read, they should be .03 to .06 I understand that the Magnum head conversion will never be truly quiet.

Oh really? That's the 1st I've heard the "never really quiet" comment on a Mag conversion.
I hear of talk of special "measuring" pushrods that can be bought, but how do you really tell? Tighten the measuring tool til it don't spin in your fingers? I've never bought/used one of these.but I;'ve worked on many a SB Shivvy, as well as /6s and 273s that have adjustable valves, but I always adjust them with the engine running. I do not have an adjustable valvetrain on here.

and as far as the .03-.06 do i need to measure that with a dial ind. and the intake off? I did use the MP "thin" Magnum head gaskets (0.028") as opposed to the 0.40-something FelPro's, so I figured I'd "gain" the difference, in less PR length needed. (does that make sense?)

UPDATE; Yesterday, Me and the kid were driving around, and a couple times we thought we smelled fuel; went to White Castle for lunch (see why I didn't say smelled "gas" ) we thought it was "the guy next to us" cuz that truck was gone and so was the smell when we came out; stopped a couple other places and again smelled fuel; on one stop, the kid waited in the truck, as I went in to pay my bill; I noticed a wet spot under my truck 1st thought "maybe it was there already" but NOOOO; He started the truck when I went to crouch and see where the wet spot "might" be from; soon as he started it I saw gas leaking. Yup, right out the weep hole. so we drove a few blocks away where a buddy works I went in and borrowed the needed tools, and I put my new spare FP on that I keep behind the seat; went straight home and had the kid change the oil (in case it had been diluted by the gas); right at the full mark like always, it was not "over full"; but with a fresh charge of 10-W-40 in the pan, I went to town today and no noise! (it seemed to rap loudest on the highway at 65+, when it did it) but was dead quiet when I 1st assembled everything. Noise started at ~600 miles after new cam. but appears gone at the moment, with new oil in there.

When I installed the cam, I used a whole bottle of "cam assembly lube" as well as a can of STP (old stash, probably 30 year old STP) which I hear has alot of ZDDP in it; poured it right over the cam/lifter valley before re installing the intake, and fresh Valvoline 10-W-40; it now has about 2100 miles on it since the cam and head swap (yeah I know I shoulda changed the oil again that same day after break in but I did not) I did not put the STP in this oil change yet though, but I have more so probably will the next couple days while the oil is still "fresh" in the pan.

Nope noise still there. but it has not worsened in intensity since it started, still seems to come+go. I think I'll try the longer pushrods and see if it goes away before tearing into it again.
