I ordered a Transgo SK TFSC. Comes with springs, manual valve, shims and mumbly peg. I looked over the install instructions and it keeps mentioning steel balls and checkballs. Is this something that is already in the trans or do I need to buy them separate?

Anyone have install tips? What could I expect it to do for the trans?

I know it comes with the valve that pumps the torque converter in park, which saves some delayed gear engagement. The check balls are already inside the valve body.

What exactly are you looking for it to do? It isn't going to make it shift hard like a TF2 kit. It's meant to correct some factory flaws and prolong trans life.

I would like to firm up the 2-3 shift. Not looking for hard shifts, just more firm.

That kit won't do it. It's not designed to improve shift quality. From their webpage: Corrects/Prevents/Reduces: Converter slip-shudder. Leaks out vent or lever. Front bushing and seal burnup. Drainback Complaint.

I would look at the TF1 Reprogramming kit. It's not as aggressive as the TF2. I put the TFOD-HD2 kit in my 518 since there really isn't another choice, and went with the mildest settings. It shifts very nice in a 4wd truck.

It may not which is why I want to do as much research on it as possible first.

I was reading Tom Hand's guide on Allpar and the instructions and it says this pertaining to the SK-TF in the Tom Hand section:

Shift Kit

The "Shift kit" or "SK-TF" is a small version of a "Reprogramming Kit." The SK-TF can be used in fleet service and everyday vehicles. It eliminates the 2-3 shift overlap, firms up the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts (not severely), provides more fluid to the front clutch circuit, and gives a bypass to prevent excessively high fluid pressure during cold weather starts and higher RPM service.

In the instructions for the SK-TF from Transgo it gives directions for enlarging a hole in the separator plate to firm up the 2-3 shift, so that is why I'm wondering if it would help.

Here's the page from the TFSC kit explaining what it does with shifts. Take it for what it's worth. It may get what you are looking for.

The SK-TF kit is also referred to the "No Yo-Yo" kit; it's mostly about dealing with converter drainback. It lacks any mods outside of the VB and, therefore, isn't as refined as the TF-1 or TF-2.
