I find it hard to believe that, even with a loose bushing, a converter would drain back enough in a "few minutes" to cause this problem. As suggested, check the line pressure.

To clarify the OP, after sitting a few minutes and shifted to D and it won't move, then shifting to R does Reverse engage right away?
If so, it's a problem with the rear clutch.

Pre-'67 input shaft is 19-spline, '67-later is 24-spline...so no interchange..
