My door panels are black but are faded at the top to the point where there pretty much gray. Is there a dye that I can rub in to restore these. Im afraid that if I use the paint they make for the interior panels, it will fill in the grain of the panels. Any ideas?

Any dye, which is really paint, will not soak into the plastic.
Seeing as you have black panels, which are the easiest to get, I'd just say get better panels at a swap meet or something. Repros suck. Stick with an original set.

Why won't it stick to the door panels? I've heard of a lot of people successfully re-dying their entire interiors, plastic pieces and all?

I redid my interior panels with the ppg specialty paint.... I am really pleased with the result. The paint is a jet black color(low gloss). It didn't fill in the grain at all and has a nice almost satin look to it.... I will get you the part number when I get home tonight. This stuff is premixed and all you do is shoot it after a little prep.

I haven't personally dyed or sprayed any, but from everything I've heard, it looks great if done properly. Everyone I know agrees that the re-pops are JUNK...Stay away from them. I've always advised people needing E-body door panels to get a good used black set and use them black or re-color them. In your case you have a black set with good grain, albeit faded. Buy the SEM dye and re-use what you have. Save your money by not buying another set of panels...

What are you to do if you have a few scratches in the finish where the "texture" has scraped off. If you spray the panels you will still see those areas.

Once the plastic has degraded from UV and becomes crumbly chalky dust there's no fix other than re-skinning the entire panel (which is expensive).

If the plastic is still fresh and not sun rotted you can freshen up a dull looking set and mask minor flaws and scratches etc. with a coat of dye (paint) but you won't be hiding much else.

Check out the Cuda thread in the projects/survivors section -- If i'm not mistaken, he restored his Cuda door panels and they looked/sounded a lot worse then yours

Let me elaborate.
Current paints do attach themselves to the plastic door panels relatively well. However, it will not last forever and if you hit it right the paint will come off. Whether this happens right away or in a few years...it will happen. The plastics that are on new car bumpers are formulated to accept paint adhesion. 1970's door panels were not formulated for this. They are polyethelene, which does not allow for great paint adhesion.
However, if you have a color interior, it's probably your only/best option.
My point was, if you have black panels, just buy another set. Black is the easiest to get. I personally wouldn't go through the hassle to paint black panels and then worry about matching gloss with the rest of the interior and also worry about paint adhesion. However, maybe the budget doesn't allow for this.
Also, if painted well, you won't fill in the grain. However, I have seen some panels where they were painted too heavily and it did fill in the grain.

There not at the point of the dust yet. The plastic is still in very good shape; it's just that it is turning gray on the tops. I'll try to give them a good cleaning and see how they come out.

They are made out of polypropylene, the same stuff they make water resistant ropes out of. It accepts paint/dye even worse than polyethylene does.

Black is not only the easiest to get, they survived far better than any other color, including white. I had no choice as there does not seem to be any surviving B5 blue panels out there without horrible chalking. Yeah, the black may show through one day but even if it does, it is a far cry from the greasy, chalky, scratched blue ones that survived.

Here is a thread in the "member projects" section. This looks like it may be a good option for people with chalky door panels. His panels turned out looking pretty good.
