Sample quote The researchers further analyzed their results, looking for a two-drug combination that might be effective at lower, safer dosages. Eventually, they found two top-performing drugs that could produce even more positive results when administered together. One of the drugs, nifedipine, is a calcium channel blocker that doctors can use to treat high blood pressure. The other is a Rho kinase inhibitor, which can treat glaucoma. Hope my pee doc reads this. Not really looking forward to the next time even with better drugs. Hope to just avoid them by drinking more water.
July 19th should be "Drive Like Rockford Day". R.I.P. Jimmie.

Interesting. In my case, I'm "calcium-absorptive", meaning I have to keep calcium intake as close to zero as possible. I asked my kidney surgeon about taking a calcium blocker, but he said not in my case. (He's not the guy in the office with an interest in Porsches, ) So far, 5 years without dairy, broccoli, green veggies, ice cream, chocolate, tea, etc has kept that issue at bay. Not always fun - I'd love a good Chicago-style pizza and a salad - but better than the alternative ! Drink your water, kids !

I've had stones 4 times, haven't had an issue since I started taking magnesium everyday. That was 10 years ago.

I passed about 1 a month for 3 years, the first one I got was tiny and I thought I had the clap from my girlfriend, all I get is a back ache. I pissed something that looked like red coffee in 2006, drove 110 miles to the hospital, gave me a CT scan and I had 5 stones in one kidney, 4 in the other. Largest one was the size of a pea. I did the electroshock lythotrypsy a month later at a hospital that was 380 miles away on one kidney then had to wait 2 months to do the other one. I woke up during the second procedure, that was not fun having the doc holding me down while the nurse pumped me with more drugs to get me back out cold.
2 years later, I was at work on a remote site, I had a percoset that got me through that one, it was the size of a corn kernel. It stopped about half way out, I was drinking water just so I could finish passing it. That was a no underwear day and you dont hold it to pee... The last one I passed was about 2 weeks ago, it was tiny which means that I only get a back ache. The last shocking they did on my kidneys was about 3 years ago. I have to drink about a gallon of water a day and I still get them. Mine are from red meat. High phosphates cause mine. I have passed so many that I have to give women a hard time about giving birth..I just dont understand why they complain...

Never had them, but read they are caused by high levels of sodium and dehydration. People I know who drink alcohol seem to get them more than people I know who don't drink. Drinking alters your body's ability to maintain correct fluid levels.
Never heard that caffeinated drinks actually cause it.
Potassium is your friend. It's stored in your cells and regulates your salt and water levels. You just need to have enough reserve stored away.
It's very easy to blow past the 2000+/-mg of salt you really need in a day. Read the label on soups, chili, etc. and 3000mg a day is more like it. Do this over and over coupled with not enough water and potassium and it's easy to get into trouble.
Avocados turned into guacamole is a great source of potassium, and much better than eating a banana, imo.

They made me quit drinking sweet tea ! They didn't make me....I did it voluntarily! I was 56 before I had a kidney stone attack. My wife and I had just bought our place in Myrtle Beach and were about 2 months into the remodeling. We had worked like dogs all day, and I'm sure I was dehydrated. We went to Outback for dinner that night, and I bet I drank a half gallon of sweet tea! That night, I woke up in horrible pain, and thru up from what felt like somewhere down near my toenails! After I had been to my doctor back home, and then to my urologist....who told me tea (sweet or unsweet) helped form kidney stones. Right then and there I vowed to never drink another drop. He told me it was a lifetime accumulation, and not the 1/2 gallon I drank the night I had the attack. Don't care.....never drinkin another drop!!

What a bunch of pansies........Just kidding, Over 200 stones either passed or busted up internally. I passed a 17mm stone!!! Doctor said not possible and then I put it on his desk along with the BAG full of many others. I had a jar full that the Wake Forrest Hospital took for study. You need to find out what kind they are and treat accordingly. The Potassium Citrate helped me a lot but I have the Uric Acid stones. 7 Internal procedures over about 2 years including the first two where the doctor said he lost count of them all while laser blasting them internally. I actually walk around most of the time with some. I have a 12 mm one in at the moment good times...... Holy smokes....that must be miserable. I have had two. The last one was the one that about put me under. There was NO pain medication that worked. They wanted to send me home until I could not stop throwing up....these things are miserable.
Never, ever argue with an IDIOT. They will drag you to their level and then beat you with their years of experience

I'm with you Sasquatch - I had me 1st stone at 32 yrs old, 2nd at 41, third at 50 - all 10+mm and passed them all. Now I'm 60 and have an 11mm stone attached to the wall of my left Kidney - good stuff, hate those stents... The pain I had from he one ten years ago caused me to pass out at a graveside funeral service, face down in the snow - that was a good show... LOL (Sorry Mr's D)
