My tailer is showing its age. I bought it in 1998. White exterior is dull and chalky, and tough to get off. What have you found is a good way to remove the chalk?

A good wash then a wax job usually does the trick.

i used simple green and water , make the mix strong use a quart to four gallons of water. then use a cleaner wax with a buffer using a wool pad . that process would last a season before i needed to do it again. usually took a full day to do.

Trisodium phosphate. Years ago we used trisodium phosphate on big water tanks and towers to remove the old chalking paint before repainting. We cut up floor buffing pads and dipped then in the trisodium/water solution, white or grey scotchbrite pads might work.

The "chalk" is oxidation; as the paint essentially dries out from exposure, the pigment basically rises to the surface.
Back in the days of nitrocellulose lacquer and the early enamels, you'd polish that off with a compound.
Problem with the trailer panels is most don't have a very thick coating, so you want to take it easy.
An aggressive rubbing out can remove 1 to 1.5 mils, and there may only be 4-5 mils applied.

Short term-wash-n-wax. Long term-sand down to bare metal or close to that. Use a Sherwin Willians industrial enamel and it will be good for 7-10 years. You can also use a siliconized oil based paint( reasonable price compares to 1K or 2K). High gloss and long gloss retention. Very durable. You need to spray or roll it in a garage. Takes 8-10 hours to set.

I used lemon pledge after a basic wash and it brought back the shine and no more "chalk" when I wipe my hand across it. I've been doing that for 4 years now and seems to be working like a charm. as a side note, I live in Alaska so our weather conditions are different and I don't use it as much as most of you guys. just try it on a small area see for yourself.

laugh2..... I use the dollar general stuff.

Wash with car wash soap and brush, rinse, destreak, rinse, squeegee one panel at a time, dry, hit with McGuires and buffer. It’s a hard game to play in the desert. I’ll never buy a top shelf trailer unless I have a garage to put it in.
