I like the idea, but the rims would need to be a lot wider and have a lot more offset on the outside of the car. New cars have wheels with a ton of backspacing and a very minimal wheel lip on the outside which isn't very appealing to me.

Please stop confusing the issue with FACTS ...

Good point , I didn't even think of that , it's going to be near impossible to get the right look.

While doing a search for other things , these old posts came up and I have something to add...
These rings will fit a 17 inch wheel ( pictured ), not sure about a 20 inch wheel.

So I've looked at the pictures and am wondering when you guys are going to start wearing bib overalls and smoking corncob pipes?

I was there when these cars were new and I can tell you without a doubt that the FIRST thing that got changed was the wheels. Chrome 5-spoke wheels like Cragar S/S were top of the list. But nobody, and I mean nobody bragged about stock steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps. If you couldn't afford the Cragars then the chrome steel slots were OK but everyone would know that you were too poor to buy a "real mag".

That's another thing. I didn't hear them called "poverty caps" until maybe 20 years ago. I think that was a clever phrase coined by some Hot Rod Magazine writer looking to add punch to a story. I encourage the person who disputes that to post a copy of the oldest printed word using the phrase "poverty caps". With my luck it'll probably be 1949, but I want to know.

Anyway, back in the day a real car had to have five spoke or five slot wheels. Stock steel rims didn't make the grade.

Best Regards,
R.

They are cut from some 14 inch wheel centers , mistakes that were made.
Finding a use for them. My idea. Weld'em up !!!

What would a 20" steel wheel weigh...55#, 60#, more? You may be almost doubling your unsprung weight on the car by going to the 20" steel wheel.

I seem to recall seeing a few show cars over the last ten years that had custom aluminum wheels made to look like steel. Its possible, but not cheap. I think Ray Evernham had some made and I want to say there was one other vintage stock car looking vehicle out there that had some made up to look like steel.

Anybody done this? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/1343795-scratchchin.gif" alt="" />

There was a fairly recent thread specifically about Mike Curtis (former Boyd Coddington employee) that was making the sort of wheel you're inquiring about. BUT, in my opinion, you take a hubcap designed for a 15" wheel and put it on a 20" wheel, and it looks REALLY out of place.

My first Mopar was a '69 Coronet, in 1988. My highschool friend called the dog dishes poverty caps. I have no idea if he came up with that independently, or what, and haven't heard anyone else call them that, either. I've always heard dog dish.

Those wheels look O.K.
I just prefer more tire less rim on a vintage car.

I hope someone comes up with a decent modern package, but think the stock poverty cap would just look way too small on a big rim.

Can't actually say when I 1st heard that term, but it was many decades ago.

The dogdish on that Charger were special made to look right ( size wise ) for those wheels. On a 17 inch wheel , which is what I had pictured , the 9 inch cap looks ok to me.

It was my thread and My 18x11 all aluminum 'steel' wheels are 29lbs.

I painted a set of 17inch stock steel wheels body color and mounted Cordoba center caps. They look good on my 05 Magnum SXT. I’ll post a pic when I figure out how.

I was going to ad nubs for a dog dish to the 17s but the raised center area where the dishes would sit on sticks out to far, the face of the dog dish would have stuck out past the face of the tire and just looked strange.

Meh...I'd rather see 15" stuff on everything, even the new stuff.

[Linked Image]

Now that looks good. Much better than big rimz.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Cool.

I would add that an 18x7.5 police wheel at 31# is not an exact comparison to an all steel, 20" factory style poverty wheel. Perhaps it would not be the 60# I posited above, but it may be very near 45-50#. Nearly double that of a lighter weight aluminum 15" wheel or even a race weight steel 15" wheel. I have 15x7 steel racing wheels that are 21#, so your 18x11 at 29# is impressive. Congratulations.

I personally can not stand the look of original plain steel wheels and don't understand the attraction to them, but that is my preference. If you and a percentage of other mopar owners are happy with them, or an 18" aluminum copy, Boo Yaa !
