what changes need to be made to the 727 to swap out a valve body with brake to one without a brake ? can the rear vent location still be used ?
as always, up and bow TIA.

Nothing needs to change. Straight swap assuming not trying to go back to full automatic.

Different folks do different subtle things when a brake is used - springs in high gear, clearances, pressure - but I don't think any of it is so different that the trans would have to come apart and be changed. The small hole typically drilled in the high drum doesn't seem to cause an issue with high gear. Some guys have used a good valve body with a brake in it and never used it. So if you like the way it works, just unhook the wire and forget about it.

Griner built one that applied the rear band when the brake was on and released gradually after the brake was released. The intention was to have the band off by the 1-2 shift. So my only concern, if you change it out, would be what's going on with the rear band. Other than that, I don't know of any issues including the vent at the back of the case.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

this swap is just intended as a learning curve while the engine is sorted to the chassis, then the brake valve body will be re-installed.
the governor has been removed and trans has been built for a brake, but this is the first brake transmission i have owned. just wanted to find out if this was possible to do, and i don't want to ruin the trans in the process.
thanks for responding ! up

Not sure there is a real reason to pull the valve body if you intend to go back to the brake at some point. The brake doesn't have to be used. Again, my only concern would be the band. If it's LBA, then that would eliminate that issue.

good point. i don't know if the brake is LBA or not. i'm not a fan of no LBA valve bodies.
i guess i'll have to investigate further into this brake vb.

Ask the people who built it or pay attention to whether it has engine braking in low gear or not. Or check pressure at the rear servo port in low gear.

Thank You ! i was told these guys were a good builder, but i haven't had time to dig into this transmission. my intentions were to call [i really did see the number ! laugh2] and ask them if they do anything to mark their product in any way for future reference, ie, internal parts used for a particular job number.
thanks again CM, for the confidence builder ! bow
as i stated before, this is my first experience with a brake, and i'm just taking my baby steps, so i need all the help i can get. please bare with me guys, because i'm sure to ask more DUMB questions about trans brakes in the future !
