JW Ultrabell on a 727 transmission.
Weird thing is happening now.
Starter was tight going in but went in flush.
When I go to start the car, the starter doesnt seem to engage on 1st startup.
Starter free spins then 2nd spin it engages, a bit of a kickback but nothing crazy.
Anyone know what's happening here?
Why is starter free spinning and not engaging on 1st attempt?
Removed stock bellhousing and just added Ultrabell, internals are all the same.

the nose fits VERY tight in a machined hole in the bellhousing, is it possible the nose of the starter broke when installing? I had to hone the hole out on mine

Like mentioned above. The JW hole is a machined hole for the started nose. I actually had to clean up the casting some on the nose of my starter to even get it to seat all the way in. Just be sure it's meshing properly. Last starter I had needed shimmed, new one does not.
See ya, Ken

Are you using a mini starter? Mine wouldn't fit properly either, but I elected to mill the nose on the starter down a bit rather than modify the bell.

We did the same thing. Used a cut off wheel and removed the nose off the starter.

Starter was snug going in but the starter did go all the way in and flush with the bellhousing.
Why would the starter not engage with the ring gear right away?

Misaligned. Very little aftermarket works without adjustment.

Everything needs checked and double checked. Hell my Keith Black block needed the side ground some for clearance even with a mini starter. It was rubbing and kicking it in crooked.

I love the Reid case/bell for this reason. It has a massive opening in the bottom for work friendly space. Including sticking your head up there and measuring the starter engagement. You can get it absolutely perfect.

All of my powerglides (3) are switched over to ATI cases and bellhousings after cracking a case and blowing out fluid last year. 1.69 low gear, 1.80 low gear, and 1.98 low gear. Small block and big block bellhousings

What would cause the starter to not energize and just spin without the teeth on the starter engaging on the ring gear.
After the initial spin over, it then engages.
So weird

New starter, only thing changed was cutting off OE bellhousing and added JW Ultrabell.
I'm wondering if the starter snout is tight going in, that might be causing the issue.
Getting this starter out is virtually impossible with TTI headers. I think I'll have to remove the transmission to get the starter out.
If that's the case, I 5hink I'm going to go back to factory bellhousing abd just put in an old case.

You have 2 choices that I can see.. either you
change the way the headers run or you change the
trans.. myself I would reroute the headers but I
do that stuff on my junk a lot.. good luck
