I'm looking for some info on refinishing the aluminum trim that goes around the trunk and tail lights on a 1970 GTX.

I bought the reproduction piece that goes on the trunk but I don't see where they are reproducing the other three pieces that go around the tail lights and across the rear panel.

Is bright dip and anodizing the same thing? The surface finish looks more satin than polished. I can strip the anodizing off the parts and repair/polish the moldings. I know it's not correct, but it seems I could spray a satin clear over the polished parts and it might match the reproduction part. Would anodizing over the polished parts result in a more satin finish?

Anything you polish will eventually get a milking looking finish regardless if you clear it or not.Anodizing and bright dip are the same and used on all exterior aluminum for protection.Polished or not the finish will look the same once anodized.

I talked to them today since no one local, that was willing to do automotive parts, had a tank big enough for that five boot long tail panel molding.

I have had anodized trim polished. Some of the trim has been on cars that I have for 30 years or so and it still looks great. Living out west where the air is on the dry side might have something to do with it.

It was Kings of Trim I spoke with, I'll have to try Shine on me trim. For the price I was quoted to refinish three out of four pieces by Kings, I'm tempted to just polish the parts myself and wait to see if they ever reproduce them.

Shine on looks like a good place. Never used them so I don't know. The alternatives are very expensive nos that are no guarantee.

I left a message with Shine On but haven't heard back from him.

I sent some pictures of the moldings Kings of Trim and was quoted $600, maybe more after seeing them in person, for three pieces. If I had to do the new reproduction trunk piece to match, that would probably be another $300. These moldings are not in too bad of shape-one very small ding and some light scratches.

I did talk to a guy in Idaho that does trim work also. He figured $40/foot to do them which would be about $350 for the three pieces. At least he was upfront about the timeframe-he's so backed up he said to plan on three months.

I did get a call from Shine On Me about doing the trim. He's only backed up a couple of months so I'm going to send everything to him.
