3 years ago my plan was to get my car alkalin dipped to remove all the paint, rust etc at the time the cost was $1400 now that I am ready to have it done the price has jumed to $2400. Couple that with wanting to e-coat and I would be lookin outside my budget at about 5k for the services.

My plan now is to plastic bead blast the shell and my body guy suggested self etching primer. I can find some info on this site and other but looking for more .
If I'm looking to do a complete shell ( Challenger) how much primer will it take? Whats the cost? Pros? Cons? Whats the best self etching primer? Thanks for any input.

Dupont Veriprime and PPG's DP 40,50 & 90 are probably the 2 most well known and used.

The DP can be mixed to look like the OEM dip gray primer as I think there is a white, green and black. (do some research on this).

I would guess on 1-1.5 gallons. Once mixed, you'd have 2 gallon or so of sprayable material. The DP can also be mixed as a sealer later on.

I personally like the DP because once its primed, rust doesn't come back and pentrate the metal.

Veriprime is also a good product, but if sprayed and left without a top coat for a while, surface rust will come back through.

PPG's DP primer line is Epoxy, not self-etching.

PPG's self etch is DX 1791/1792.
i usually etch prime and then DP over the etch. never had a rust problem in 20+ years of priming that way.
i have had rust problems with DP over bare metal.

perception is 90% of reality

The PPG paint store where I bought my materials from told me to use DP epoxy primers right on top of bare metal. They did sell me a can of the DX metal conditioner and told me to use that to clean and treat the metal with prior to spraying. They told me that the epoxy was better at sealing out moisture than the etching primer. My Dart along with my brother's entire car have been done in this fashion..... My car was rust free to begin with so hopefully there won't be a problem.

My dad had a set of chevy rally wheels sandblasted and then coated with an etching primer followed by delstar. This is a dry weather only car and the wheels already have rusty spots growing on them.

I too, use DPLF over bare metal.

The DX579 is to etch the metal if you use it don't use water like the bottle says or it will flash rust. I always used laqure thinner to clean it after.
If a metal has been blasted it does not need to be etched for the DPLF Primers to bite. Used of a Da and #80 can also be used of metal to scrath it up.
