You can try a carb spacer to help insulate it from heat and keep it cooler. On filling the car with gas, mine does the same thing. I fill it very slow and listen when it gets close. I don't think the newer gas pumps sense the fuel level on the older cars. Maybe from the thicker filler necks on the old cars, not sure.

You could also block the heat crossover in the intake manifold to help keep that cooler as well. Depending on what kind of choke you have, it may stay engaged longer though.

Thanks, It has a 1" spacer on it, Glad its not just me with spilt gas. I wonder if there is an adapter, dose the vent line have anything to do with it?

For the hard starting or filling the tank? On filling the tank, mine is a 73 with the 4 vents on the front of the tank and I have them running to the vapor separator underneath the car and then vented from there and it still does it.

When fueling, try holding the nozzle upside down (hose up).

Anymore, I never auto fill though, I just hold on & listen.

Fuel is boiling in carb due to heat soak. That is reason for hard starting after sitting for a few minutes.

probably not what you want to hear - if a heat spacer and/or blocked heat riser passage doesn't solve your problem then an electric fuel pump is the only absolute solution to hard start due to evaporation .

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Ethanol boils out a lot quicker than gasoline.

When new, muscle era MOPARs were often slower starting hot... but not too bad. With EFI blend gas, that boils eaisly, it is a lot worse for MOPAR or any carburated vehicle.

Heat insulation of the carb may help. Different gas may help. An electric fuel pump helps. The electric pump, mounted in the rear where it is cooler, will re-fill the carb bowls quickly for faster start. Still need to hold the throttle open to clear out the extra gas.

I have added electric pump to both of my carburated engines for faster start and also to prevent vapor lock running. Getting some pressure in the fuel before it gets into the hot engine compartment helps a lot.

Yes the problem is todays gas is made to run under high pressure in a sealed system, not low pressure in a system open to the atmosphere. In short it just evaporates/boils easier.

Take care,
Rick
