That is normal for '72-'74 489 casting third-members.
Does the MS number on the gear tell the date?

no I'm pretty sure that number will match a number stamped on the stem of the pinion , pick that broken looking section and maybe you will be able to see it .
what concerns me is the part number on that gear , thats way to early a number to be a 489 gear ... I think ... I have a 3.55 gear set down stairs I can look at .

Just looked at the gears , the MS # ??? it's not on the pinion stem . The date is there as Dr. diff says , its after the MS number , I see a 2 and then a 1 . the part number is correct , I forgot the ring gear doesn't care what housing it is in , it's the same ring gear they have been making since they started making 3.55's for 8 3/4 rears .
Oh wait , I'm not dr. diff and it appears he is the ONLY person ON the planet that knows ANYTHING about the 8 3/4 rear ... my bad .

a dented cast iron housing? I didn't know cast iron could dent! I would imagine it would crack before denting!

Its not a dent persay but a dimple, and I have seen them on numerous 489 cases. The one in the pic looks to have a crack in it though.
416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out. 11.06 open headers----so far!!

The crack appears to be dried mud packed into the casting dimple.
which is why I asked if he picked at it ....

Hi Guys, sorry...No I have not picked at it. This is something I am buying and the seller sent me pics. I just did not want to buy something that was cracked or damaged. When I get it here, I will have a look and see. Thanks for the postings...It was a big help!
