What's your guys thoughts on a 588 build? I have the option of buying an aftermarket shortblock with a Molnar crank, GRD alloy rods & Diamond pistons. The crank & rods are new, pistons have seen some action. Is this a good combo? I see a lot of 572 & 604 combos, 588 seems to be a bit of an orphan but keen to hear opinions.

Good combo. Lots of torque. A 572 is 4.50 bore x 4.50 stroke. So, a 588 is a little more of either. A good head will go a long way. I'm building a 605, 4.625 stroke x 4.560 bore, with an Indy solid block and B1 heads. Pistons are specific for Indy heads vs. B1 heads.

I just purchased a Molnar crank. Seems to be a nice piece. A 588 is generally a 4.560" bore 4.500 stroke. It's at max bore for standard bore spacing.

I had Todd at Marsh performance build Me a 588 for my 68 Cuda street car. 4.5 bore 4.625 stroke. It made 960 horsepower and 860 foot pounds of torque. It's an awesome combo......

Id say 4.500 X 4.625 is the Mopar std for a 588. IMO just need a good set of heads to support the cubes.

Sure. Indy aluminum RB Block. Indy 572 - 13 heads, they flow 410 CFM. 14.1 cr. .800" 290@.050 solid roller cam... It's in a 68 Cuda Fastback with a passion 5-speed Overdrive.

On the dyno graph the top two lines are with an indy 3x manifold and Dominator. The lower two or with a Mopar 337 and 850 double Pumper. The double pumper and 337 manifold really choked it down!

4.375 bore and 4.625 crank is the most popular and make gobs of torque.
I'm a fan

4.625 stroke, i wonder what the longevity of the bearings are beating on it in a bracket car turning it 7k?

It's 588 cubic inches. I use a McLeod dual disk clutch. I expect zero problems with it

At that small of a bore, it would really shroud the valves and not let it breathe.....

What RPM are you going to shift at ? I hear a duel clutch will not be able to handle a higher RPM shift, say around 7800 to 8000 RPM. Anyone else want to chime in!

The clutch will be a problem if you want to shift above 6000ish.

Just because you think it won't make it true. Horsepower is KING. To dispute this is stupid. C. Alston

I will probably shift around 7000. I have been using these clutches for the last 20 years and I have never had a problem with them๐Ÿ‘

My new mill is 4.625 stroke x 4.560 bore. I will more than likely be using a single disc 10" clutch. Works fine well above the engines potential. Still deciding on Black Magic (Cale Aronson), Advanced (Robe Youngblood) or HRS (Chris Hyatt). You can't go wrong with any of them.

I run a 588 in my 64 Dodge. Engine was built by Todd Goodwin. It runs very strong.
