So Im setting up the coronet for a 5.7 hemi swap and the next big thing to tackle is getting a new tranny in since my 904 has definetly seen better days. Im going to swap it to a 727. For the torque converter I was looking at a TCI Street Fighter 10" converter with 3000-3500 rpm stall speed advertised. I plan on using 3.55s in the rear end. the 5.7 will be stock, I may use a comp 268 cam in it.

Anyway will this be a good converter for my application? How will it drive? I have no experience with performance converters.

But I do want to go fast.

It all depends on a varaity of factors. The best thing anyone can tell you is have ALL the info you can on the car and the rest of the combo and give the guys at TCI a call.

I thought I had a good conv picked out untill I talked to them and they suggested a slightly different one.

I am making a 5.7 swap to a 727 as well. I know nothing about torque converters and would like to know how you tell if a torque converter is neutrally balanced. Were they neutrally balanced from the factory?

If it's neutral balanced, there won't be any weights on the side of the converter that goes towards the block..........

Since the comp 268 cam is really a torque monster, I would think that your peak torque would be around 2800-3000 rpms. The rule of thumb is to get a TC that will stall around 300-500 rpms before your peak. So a 3000-3500 stall might be too much. Plus with 3.55 gears, you should be at 60mph at about 2500 rpms. You really need to know where your engines peak output is in order to choose correctly.
Think about it like this. You want your TC to stall while your close to your peak torque, but not quite there. If you go too high with your stall, you will have missed your peak and your power band will be decreasing. Plus you will be slipping like crazy which will create lots of heat and premature wear on your tranny/TC. It will not be fun to drive.
FWIW, I will be running a 451 with comp 274 or 275 HL (havent decided yet) with 3.23 gears and I plan on going with TCI breakaway which stalls 2400-2800. Call TCI, BM, PTC, Dynamic, etc. and ask them, they will steer you in the right direction.
