Ram died driving to work on Tuesday. Had no choice but to have towed and mechanic tells me fuel pump went bad. Claimed he R&R Fuel Pump Assy. Charged me 365 for pump alone, 800$ total with tow and tax.

I looked under truck and was quite surprised to see no signs that this tank had been dropped.

Please see pic. This does NOT look like a "NEW" fuel pump...but what is that Gray fitting that the fuel line connects to? That almost looks new and not correctly seated!

UPDATE: I am working on uploading the pic.

The gray piece is part of the pump, it appears that it was replaced. We always lifted the bed to replace them as it was quicker and less chance of spilling fuel. Look at your bed bolts to see if they appear to have been removed.

A couple of thoughts,

Yes that does look like a new module assembly, The retainer ring will not come with the pump and is reused, The "gray thing" is not the fuel outlet, it is the rollover/vent valve.
The Metal can on top is the filter/regulator and the fuel outlet is on the side of it.
Most likely they lifted the bed to do the job (it is easier if the tank is full) look at the bed mounting bolts to see if they have been disturbed.
That is not out of line for a OE pump assembly however that labor seems abnormally high, but that is somewhat subjective depending on the area of the country one is in.

Well, I hadn't thought about lifting the bed....

They soaked down the retainer nuts on the RH side of the tank and appeared to remove the nuts. But there is no sign at all that the straps were brought down. I would assume they are rustwelded to the plastic tank...maybe they started the job thinking of droping the tank, then thought otherwise.....here is another pic of the "hinge" side of a strap. Note the old crusty zip ties and salt that has not been disturbed.

Looking at that last picture, as crusty and nasty as that truck is there is no way I would even attempt to drop that tank..that has the potential to just flat become a nightmare with stuff breaking...so In my case, the bed would be lifted.
