I pick up my new heads Friday @ Jeg's. I know they recommend their bolt set, so I'm getting them too.
I have read a few of the post re: head gaskets and which one's some of you prefer or seem to work better.
Is there any surprises relating to the intake gaskets? I run a torquer II 340 intake.
These heads are going on the engine I've ran the last 5 years. New bearings, rings, checked wear, cam & lifter change, adjustable rockers, etc....
Any other surprises I might encounter?
Oh yea, we are just doing a small pocket port, debur and smooth up the ports this year.
Thanks / Rick....

[ call Swain Tech coatings after you port them. Well worth it.
Can you explain this to me, is it they won't keep any profile after smoothed? Not trying to sound stupid, but have never had aluminum heads before.
Thanks for your help.
Rick....
They explain it on their site, but basically having the heads done after porting will raise hp anywhere from 3%-5% and sometimes a little more.
That's 4-5hp for every hundred hp you have, and it helps keep engine temp down.
http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10296
"Peak horsepower was up 2% from 318 to 324 horsepower and peak torque was up 5% from 320 lb/ft to 335 lb/ft. In the heart of the curves, these numbers were even more impressive. At 4,500 rpm, torque was up 7% from 298 lb/ft to 319 lb/ft. At 5,500 rpm, horsepower was up 6% from 302 to 320 horsepower. Most engine builders will take full advantage of the coating by making jetting (or computer), timing, and lighter weight oil for maximum power gains. However for this test, we wanted to document and publish the gains that are achieved if the only modification was coating the engine. If the proper tuning adjustments were made to take full advantage of the coatings, these results would have been even more impressive."

One surprise you might have is the alternator won't fit. The eddie heads stick out further sometimes causing interference with the alternator. This is especially true on the '69 and earlier cars with the shorter water pumps because the alternator is closer to the head in those cases.
The factory lenth spacer that goes between the head and alt was to long I had to cut some off for the Comandos. So I figuered theEdlebrocks would be the same

Hey Rick, You wont have a problem with the alternator fitting with the newer style water pump, mine fit just fine with no alterations.
Thats right, the '70 up aluminum pumps are thicker and move the alternator forward and away from the head. You still might need to use a "round back" type alternator to get it to clear.

You're right Greg, I mocked everything up and seems to fit fine.
Got one head completed, will do the other when I get in on Thursday, then off to the machine shop to double check valve seats on Friday.
I have learned one important lesson, the aluminum cuts WAY quicker with the porting tool than the cast ones did. But smooths up nicely with the emery cloth .
Thanks for everyones help.
