Don't try that method, buy, rent or borrow the correct type drum puller and do it correctly You may need to add heat on the outer hub with tension on the hubs, especially to get the driver side off There never easy, how much corrosion form road salts on this truck? Good luck, don't cut corners on this

My buddy did that with his 64 B-body sort of.
He drove the old studs out with a BFH and and turned the swage down on the new studs in a lathe to the size of the holes in the drum, just a few thou so they fit tight with no movement.
He had the correct puller and ruined the end of the axle trying to remove a particularly stubborn hub.
Never again he said.
Kevin That was my experience as well. I just change out the rear axle assembly for something more modern. That solves the brake drum removal problem on that vehicle for good. Gene

An A body 8 3/4 will bolt into a '68, '69, and maybe '70 AMX and Javelin. I've done it with my '68 AMX. Take measurements of whatever AMC car/truck/Jeep and check with Mopar experts on the closest pad measurements to see what might fit.

The paint isnt special, but his thing is way to original to cut. I can't believe I'm saying that, I modify everything I own. Anyway this is a rust free 18,000 mile California truck with the dealer installed dump mechanism for the box. Doug

I agree get the tool.I used mine a lot when we had the old Mopars.Never messed up an axel end.Thats why you leave the big nut on loose when you pull the drum.I probally did a few hundred between when we owened them at work etc.You do have to have the puller centered also.Often thought of selling my tool as I dont have any cars touse it on now and Im retired.Rocky

Your plan will work if you can't find a puller. Using the puller IS the correct way to do this, however.... if you choose to cut the studs do the following:
Cut the studs off as close to flush as possible. Then drill a 3/16" - 1/4" hole in the center of each stud approximately 1/2" deep. This will allow the swedged area of the stud to collapse on itself and not damage the hub when you force it out. If you don't drill this hole it WILL damage the hub and you'll have to pull it anyway to drill a larger hole and then find studs with a larger knurl diameter. Simply drilling the hole will solve this problem.
Once you have the drum off rebuild the rear brakes while you're in there and then replace the studs. Drill the holes in the drum to the size required to fit over the knurl area of the new studs and you're done. This will allow you to simply slip the hubs off whenever you need to service the rear brakes as well.
Like I said, this is NOT the best way to do this. Removing the hub with a puller and pressing the studs out (after drilling the hole) is the best way. But this will work if you're careful and take your time.
Good luck.

Just use a swedge removal cutter if you decide to pop the studs out. They are available from several sources. I make my own. example: https://goodson.com/products/swedge-tools

I pressed them out once, and the swedge opened the hole up even bigger. I've been preaching this for years but nobody listens.

What's the pink in the pic??? My wife's car. Yes I cut it up a matching number 73 340 4 speed Ralley. Now a 360 4 speed fake R/T. She wanted a Panther Pink 4 speed Challenger. The Jeep will be her "garden truck". No more mulch in the trunk of the Challenger. Doug
