does an F body rear end fit into an A body? I know the rear is wider by a few inches, but will there still be enough tire clearance in the wheel well? and does it still bolt up to the rest of the car? I know the drive shaft also has to be shortend too. the car in question is for my 71' scamp..

Besides the rear being wider, the spring perches are different and would have to be changed. Not a big deal if you can weld, and the new perces are about $13 from Mopar. I have seen F-body rears in Dusters and Demons/Dart Sports, but they have an open wheelwell. The "slab side" A-bodies (Dart, Valiant, Scamp) dont have the room for a wider rear. Its not worth the trouble. Get ahold of an A-body 8 1/4 rear. They are still pretty easy to find

there is a guy on the /6 site that had a 70 Valiant (4 dr) that had an F body rear in his for a while; I dont remember why he took it out but it wasn't because the F body rear blew out, or such. IIRC he found an 8-3/4 which was what he was originally wanting.

thanks for the info. I bought the axle being told it was for an A body, but after some measuring found it was wider than what I was really needing. aw well I guess. thanks again

Now I have a 65 Cuda and they have monsterous sized rear wheelwells for some reason. I am using a F body 8 1/4 under mine. I can run my 78 LRT's rear tires and wheels under it, 275/60 HR 15 on a 8" rim if its only me and the wife in the Cuda. If I have a rider in the rear the tires rub on the springs. It does fit on the stock springs without binding. I have run it this way for 8 years and 50,000 miles.

Just for info, I am running a 3.55:1 Suregrip from a 8 3/8 Dodge Van in the 8 1/4 housing that came with 2.94:1 open gears. The truck 8 3/8 is the same as a car 8 1/4, go figure. DaveJ

I just want to add to this to clearify. I removed this rearend from outunder an Aspin R/T. I did not figure it had been changed as it was just as rusty as the rest of the car. 90% of the Aspin R/T was gone. DaveJ

Do you know what the drum to drum width is of the F-Body rear?

Thanks,
Ken
