IIRC the one-wire alternator was developed primarily for the hot rod crowd because it looks better and doesn't require as much wiring. Back in the day, they didn't start charging right away, but had to get over a certain rpm to start charging. So they're okay for a garage queen, but I wouldn't have one for a daily driver. Think of all the things you are going to be using on your car, find the max amps and add. As you won't probably be using everything at once, the total of all the max loads should be sufficient. Again, back in the day, upgrading from a 37 amp alternator to a 65 amp one was the thing to do. Now, I'm guessing you will probably be looking at a 120 amp alternator. Keep in mind that modern electronics are becoming much more efficient, like the newest amplifiers, also LEDs for lighting. To calculate total lighting load, add all the wattages from all the bulbs and divide by 12. Electric fans are an area I have not explored. Good Luck! R.

I second Dog Days the one wire alternator does not charge below 1500 RPMs roughly they didn't do great for daily drivers that saw a lot of around town use sitting at traffic lights and what not ask for your amperage I have a 140 amp that I robbed off of a Ramcharger that was outfitted for fire truck use I believe that it is a Mopar product but I'd have to double check for you I run an electric fan a 500 watt amp and AC with the headlights on it sometimes Cuts in and out at idle but driving is fine and charges just to give you a point of reference

First step is to figure your loads... and go from there. Ignition, fuel pump, fan, lights, AC?, accessories. There are posts in the archives to help with "standard" loads. An electric fan pulls a lot of amps and the fan is mostly needed in traffic or low speed which means idle RPM. You need lots of alternator idle output with electric fan. As far as what to run, it depends in part on weather you are running AC. A 120 amp Denso can be retrofitted pretty eaisly with "non AC" setup. "With AC" needs specific brackets which do not fit the Denso or other alternatives so well. There are 140+ high amp alternators available from Powermaster (GM based) though these may not fit well with BB and AL heads. "No fit" in my case with a BB and Edelbrock heads. FWIW I run a BB with EFI, big fuel pump and mechanical fan. With the big fuel pump + electronics, a 75A (max) output alternator could barely keep up running and big discharge at idle. I switched to the "big Chrysler" alternator from a '78 Cordoba (100+ amps) and it does fine. Just heavy. With electric fan I think you need 120+ amps output and good idle output. I may switch to a Quality Power unit to save weight (link below).It promises to install same as a "square back". Just a little spendy. I called powermaster and you're right they had nothing that would fit my car with high amperage without making special brackets to make them fit.

I had both their resto line and HO line of alternators, ZERO issues and ZERO failures, IMHO I wouldn't use anything else, they have a wide spread of alts to fit all applications and needs, well worth the money spent in my opinion, choose an application that fits your needs, when you let price dictate an inadequate purchase, that's when failure rears it's head I am going to try one of these in my Warlock, they claim 65a at idle, which is just fine for me.

You probably have already gotten your alternator? What I have is a Tuff stuff alternator that puts out amps at low RPM that fits right where the old one did with no problems. I'm running 2 fans that draw 37 amps electric pump at 10 amps. The new alternator is a 130 amps. Puts out 65 amps at 800 RPM and 85 amps at 1700 RPM. The tech I talked to said that for a Mopar that a regular alternator will put out higher amps at low RPM then a one wire. The alternator, electronic regulator and wiring harness delivered was $205. No I have not. Thanks everybody for the help!!!

On my Charger, I used a 136 Amp Denso from a Ram Truck that I got fairly cheap, but had to convert to V-Belt, and is too thick to mount in stock location. The Charger is more race than street car, so I relocated the alternator to about where a stock A/C unit would be. This gives better belt contact with the pulley too.
The Coronet has a serpentine belt conversion (Billet Specialties) with the 140 Amp, Power Master brand, one-wire alternator. It works fine.
