Hi All,

I am trying to track down an electrical problem with my 71 Charger and could use some guidance/help.

Lights off, turn signals and flashers work perfectly.

When I put the lights on, the left turn signal indicator in the instrument panel comes on steady. All of the lights are on (headlights, sidemarker, tail, etc.). The right turn signal works fine, but the left turn signal flashes very slowly.

It is not a fuse, and I am assuming it is not a ground problem as all of the lights work. Can anybody give me some advice on tracking this down?

Thanks.

Greg

Looks like one of the lights is grounding thru the turn signal. Clean the grounds, starting in the area of the outside turn signals.

Headlight and front marker light grounds are most likely suspects.

When I disconnect the left turn signal from the left sidemarker light, it fixes the steady turn signal light on the instrument panel, and everything works, except of course the left turn signal. When I plug it back in, there's my problem.

I redid the one ground that I know of, that grounds all the front end lights I believe. That didn't fix it.

Is the turn signal connector bad, or something in the turn signal housing?

Clean the inside of the bulb socket. A terminal in there is probably cruddy.

Take your regular sized phillips screwdriver and loosen then re-tighten the two screws facing down from light housing through the lower valance. Left side most likely, but do them both. R&L.

The inside of the bulb housing looks fine, but the one screw in the bottom of the valance is super rusty, I am wondering if that has something to do with it, are those screws grounding the housing (electrical stuff is not my strong point)?

Thanks for the help.

IMO Either you have bad bulb or you have the side markers and turn signals swapped. Turn signal plugged into a side marker.

Yes those screws ground the housing.

Hey Andy, I am good, just been really busy and had a frustrating experience getting my motor rebuilt after I wrecked it at NYIRP.

It'll probably never be nice, but I am hoping it's close to being reliable and roadworthy.

If you are ever driving around stop by, I'll send you a PM where I live now.

The front turn signal socket is crimped into the pot metal housing, I’ve found ground continuity problems between the socket and housing from time to time. Slightly twisting the socket in the housing can temporally restore a ground path to the socket, or better yet provide alternate ground path to the socket sleeve.

Thank you for all of the help, hopefully I have enough ideas now to get this straightened out.

Punch in ( gently ) couple of sections of the socket outer lip against the housing to "restore" the ground path between socket and housing, very tipical problem. The socket looses the installing pressure with housing
