Hi all I have a 73 Duster race car that I would like to put back on the street but I am running into an issue trying to get a replacement title for it(the title was lost years ago). The dash was removed previously when the cage was installed and I can't come up with the dash to get the vin tag. I have found the factory sticker on the drivers door that has the vin on it but it has been painted over when the car was painted so I can't read the vin. Does anyone know if I pull the clear plastic cover that is over the vin sticker off if it will ruin the vin number underneath? Is there anywhere else I could find the vin number on a 73 Duster?
Thanks for your help.
Dave

Should find a stamped VIN on the upper radiator support lip drivers side, package tray and the trunk rail under the weatherstrip drivers side.

If you pull the clear plastic it will destroy the VIN sticker.

Trying to remove the layer will destroy the label.

Try some paint remover on a rag, just a little at a time.

After that, you can check to see if the body numbers match the label & then apply for a bonded title & a state issued VIN.

That can be done with just the body numbers too if the door number does not match the chassis.

Depending on where you live, you may end up with a State-issued VIN based on a physical examination of the car.

Is it rattlecan paint, or car paint. Napa brand Macs brake lean #4810 will remove rattle can paint.

Unfortunately it is body paint and I worry about removing it. Thanks everyone for the ideas and the suggestions on where to look.

Only complete vin will be on the dash tag, fender tag and door sticker.
The rest will be partial vins.

Was the car titled in your name?
Should be simple to get a copy if it was.
Might be a fee for the microfische search to find the record if its been a long time, like a decade or more.

I'd try to clear the paint off the door sticker. A full vin has to make it simpler to get a new title.

The paint should come off the VIN sticker. Get some thinner, like Barry said above, the key is to soften the paint and not the sticker. So, just a little at a time. Keep looking at the rag and watching the paint come off. Start with a corner to figure out how it works. The plastic on the VIN sticker is actually pretty strong.
