Please help me spec the parts to build a street/mild strip 904 old school retro 80-s build.

Simple 3400lb 76 A body 4.56 rear/28 inch tire.

Simple 450-475 stock stroke 360

Im aware of the front drum/ burnout/ blow up issue id like of stray from that much of an investment because at this power level and use I just cant see it.

Ive a full alto kit, clutches/bands, ect.

A decent old school tci old school vert.

The trans act? valve body kit.

Im keeping it a full functioning valve body (non manual) since its a street driven build.

Im unclear on the lever ratio to get, and if i really need any of the billet servo-s and pistons advertised.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You should talk to CRT or A&A Trans; but for reference, my old 904 went several seasons as a basically stock unit with only good clutches & bands, a deep pan and a RMVB. 4400 stall, 3000lb footbrake drag car. Pay attention to the converter hub welded area, had a problem there after getting to 600HP & 5800 stall. That was probably age-related.
At about 640HP, 6000 stall & low 10s, the stock parts were beyond their limits; I stepped up to a CRT 904 and it's been great.

Thanks for the input, its ironic as im trying to sell a crt pro race 727, because im trying to backtrack.

Im really building me a very mild street car with a drive to the track from time to time.

And I very much agree with your statements, way back this trans with just a bs cheap vert and shift kit and nothing else lasted 3 seasons with a mild 360 bracket racing every weekend.

Mark you could take the manual valve body out and put in an automatic valve body and use the trans in the car you're building. Just a thought.

Boy am I out of the loop on auto trans and the interchangeability of parts.

The crt trans is out now, Im kinda hellbent on the 904 and just ordered a few more internal parts. And its org to the car.

See I jacked a C4 ford trans when I was 14 and have been skiddish of auto-s ever since. I will do manuals all day long but ive always farmed out auto-s.

Some days I could set the shop on fire and walk away happy.

The stoutest stock 904-style transmission was the A-999, which came behind 360s, but I'm not sure of the dates or even how to tell which is which. That's a John Kunkel question.

If you are running 4.56s you probably don't need the deep First gear of the later transmissions.

I didn't think the 904-style transmissions had the exploding drum problem.

999 has 5 clutches in front drum...you can put 5 clutches in the 904 drum by using the thin disc and steels...been there done mucho times.

904 drums don't explode due to there mast...or they are small.

Thanks, mine seems to be the 998 1976 with the 2.45 first gear.

Im kinda on the fence on the 5 clutches since ive already got the thick 4 ones.

Is there that much more holding power vs wear... I know, probably 20% more??

If you are footbraking...dont worry about adding 5th disc...

Trans-go shift kit. Have a buddy running 11.0 in a 3400 lb. Dart, with column shift and the #2 kit.

If you are going to get a new converter I would go with the a500 style pump neck, that will take away the chance of cracking a neck, ive done it 3 times. you will have to get new pump gears from A@A for that pump neck but its well worth it. ive gone 9.70's with my 904 and its held up. that's about my only issue ive had

just did a 904 a week ago using John Copes advise, i wanted a rmvb so a crt rmvb, 4.2 lever, billet servo rear, replaced the front drum single spring to a crt multispring, and blocker rod in accumalator. i purchased a deep pan from trans parts house for 20.00 the rest of the tranny was rebuilt a couple thousand miles ago. shifts are instant now.

I have a 904 in may car with CRT parts that's not a mvb and it's my understanding the line pressure is very critical. I'm using the Lokar cable. Have you thought about what you're going to use? I see Cope offers a cable system, Mancini has one similar but a little different. I'm questioning whether the Lokar is the best option for this.

I do think my kit is the transgo, as far as the kickdown part goes, im going to use the the 6bbl intake/carb setup off my t/a car while its down and have many different configs for an oem type 904 kickdown, luckly on the 6bbl it seems most 2bbl kickdown setups will work.

I also have the mp adjustable kickdown kit, just got to get it all set up right.
