In order to use the original 4-barrel air cleaner with the 4 7/32" opening, I'm thinking of replacing my Edelbrock top cover (with the 5 1/8" inlet) with one from an earlier AFB with the 4 7/32" inlet. Design is similar and it looks like it would work but am I missing something? Anybody done it?

Adapter rings aren't practical here.

If you use an Edelbrock 1405/06 it's no problem at all.

Have you had any luck finding air filter to carb gaskets? ( besides making one?).... I suck at making them.....

The circular gasket? I just cut/snip/add as required for the circle I need & join the ends & glue em with a touch of super glue on the bottom of where the ends meet so above that point is still pliable & can be lightly crushed for a good seal.

I don't know the answer to your question. But is there a later model air cleaner base that will fit your air cleaner top with the larger opening? I have both 67 and 68 air cleaner bases and have had luck solving this problem by switching bases.

It is a 1406. What's unique about them compared to others?

Nothing really unique but they are the closest to the Carter AFB and CFM as compared to the 60's era Carters.

These Hemi clones are based on 1406's

I'm running a 1406 on the rear and a 1407 on the front with progressive linkage. My lids are off 273 hi-po afb's.

Yes, they fit 600's, 750's and 800's. I build clones of all 3 sizes but for nearly anything streetable the 600's are plenty.
