This is in really bad lighting at night. I think those spots in the pictures are from the camera. When I'm all done, I'll take it out in the sun and take some pictures because it looks better then what the pictures show.

I have been following this forum from the start, and it looks like the Chevy trucks are taking over I too plan on painting my 1970 GMC pickup the roller way since the cost of restoration will leave me with no money for a bought paint job. I plan on painting the individual parts before reassembly and possibly a final coat and wetsand after it is put back together to even out any missmatched panels. The real challenge may be the painting of the interior and dash. I may try the HVLP gun and rustoleum for that.

JeffS - EXCELLENT! I have two gallons of the Masstone Tint Base but the local HD paint guys were a little iffy when I asked what colors they could make for me. I'll print this chart out and ask them if they have the same on file. I'm still not sure what color I want, but this will definitely help.

Rick, I never went to the paint counter at HD to ask about tinting the masstone base, but I am not confident that they'll necessarily know what the heck they're doing. Your statement that they seemed "iffy" just reinforces that. If you have a place in your town that sells industrial paints, they can probably tint it there.

I was at home depot looking at the gallon of masstone tint base, and it says max VOC 400. Well right now, in california there is a 350 VOC limit. Maybe it's just old stock so if I get some I should do it quick.. but you know the can said thin with Acetone only. It said not to thin for rolling (not that we would listen to them!) but I wonder if mineral spirits would be OK with the stuff.

Don't forget they can special order colors direct from Rustoleum as well. If you worry about the mixing ability, just order your selected color directly.
I had them special order Harbor Blue and I just picked it up today. Hopefully, I'll be diving in tonight!

Hey, Chopstic! I'm across the river in Hillsboro. When you get yours done, I'll have to come take a look. I'm thinking about this for my '79 Camaro project.

I think it looks pretty good even in this light. Is this after all the steps and polish, or is the hood still wet? Wow!

Remember that I used acetone (like the professional stuff says) and did not work because dried to quickly. I found out that the same company that makes the mineral spirits that you bought (Startex)also makes M.E.K (methyl ethyl ketone) they said this is the same that acetone but evaporates slower, this helps with the "self leveling" of the paint

Thanks Superchango. I think I'll stick with a stock color like canvas white, that way I can buy the matching rattlecans too.

That canvas white I put on last night, 24 hours ago, is still tacky! The weather here has been cool and rainy most of those 24 hours, so I think that the weather is to blame.

Thinking back, I posted a picture of professional almond color where some stuff had come to the surface and peeled away the paint-- what I think it was is not some oil trapped on the surface, but the mineral spirits themselves trying to get out on wet coats that I put more coats over. Had I let it dry long enough, that wouldn't have happened I am betting. It seeems to explain the scratchability too- I was leaving anywhere from 8-10 hours between coats, in this foul weather, and I know I put paint over tacki surfaces before too.

Case in point, I now have 2 coats of the black rustoleum on, which I put on during fair, dry weather, and it is unscratchable. The first coat was very dry, and had no tackiness whatsoever when I put the 2nd coat on. Now both coats are dry, and it's "tough as nails".

Sorry I doubted people's inability to scratch the stuff, I really needed to wait more than the 8-12 hours before recoats in the weather I was painting in. I don't have super alien fingernails after all..

My test subject is actually a honda civic which i converted to race in the 4-cyl division over at River-city-speeedway in St Helens, OR. I've been taking my time painting, but racing starts up here in about a month so the painting might get a bit rushed. If the Honda turns out good i'm going to use the rustoleum on my 78 datsun 280z, and i'll definetly take my time painting painting her.

My last pictures were after the fifth coat, still wet. I think i'm going to do a couple more coats before I polish it like others have done. It is looking pretty promising.

There's a big thread about this over on a honda site-

http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1555133&page=11

On that page, a guy is using a Glidden "ultra hide" paint he got from home depot when the home depot guy told him it was the same as rustoleum but they could mix any color. Here is a pic of the can:

I havent seen the stuff at my home depot, but i haven't looked that hard either. anyone else seen it?

Called my home depot and they DO have this glidden alkyd gloss in gallons and quarts, tintable. But it also says on the website that the color may yellow if not exposed to sunlight.

And I found this online, where a guy painted his interior cabinets with the same stuff, and in 6 months it yellowed. I think this stuff is not a good idea for a garaged car! Back to rustoleum..
