I found a 72 cuda with a July 72 SPD that supposedly has "Y9#" on the bc sheet. Galen's book says it's "Show car finish". I'm a little lost on why the "#" symbol would be used instead of a number. My info is from a typed up decode that GG did and I have not seen the actual sheet. His info on the decode says "Show car finish # ?" Anyone else ever see this? Thanks.

can't account for 1972 but here's what I've got for 1971:

Y91 69-71 Show Car finish A/Less gas
Y92 69-70 Show Car Finish B/Less gas
Y93 71 Show car Finish B/ less gas
Y97 70 Show car Finish 3 gallons gas

That's all i got and I can't explain that.

It might mean that the number was unreadable by GG - I would post a pic of it here as some of our members are scope

Photo of the original?

If it was a typo on the original & then used in a decoder book that would be a bit funny.

3 & # are the same keyboard key if the caps button was bumped.

As I said, I have not seen the sheet. I thought typo, too, but "Y9#" is in his 72-4 white book and simply says "Show car finish". Y93 is Show car finish B/ Less gas.

Good guess.

Y9# Show Car Finish #?

GG put a ? after the # in his decode report meaning the 3rd digit is unreadable

I'm betting Barry is correct - the sheet has "#" (shift 3) - the code in question should be Y93 - which is still "show car finish B/less gas" in '72

I'd also bet the decode by Galen predates the code book you are using for reference & the fact that Galen saw a sheet with "Y9#" lead GG to add that code to the following editions of the '72-'74 book

Ah yes...now that I'm fresh from a nap, it makes sense that the "#" is a typo on the sheet itself.

Now that that's "clear", what exactly is a "Show car finish"???

Or the # merely means any one of several digits that could be the second digit in the code.

The question remains, if it's an error, is the error Galen's or the factory?

Well, if the original BC says Y9# then I would guess that whatever happened started at the factory.

If a factory description of it exists, I have not seen yet.

Possibly buffed?

I had a '74 Cuda 360 that had "S/Car Finish" with a # in the box. Can't find the title at the moment.

The plot thickens!

I got a pretty decent description of "Show car finish" from my friend at FIA. I'll try to remember to post it here later. (No access to the info here)

Guess here: Show car finish for a car that was not being delivered to a dealer (where it would be prepped for delivery). The car would be gone over at the plant to check fit and finish, cleaning, and fluids fills. These, the types of things a dealer ordinarily preforms.

I for one would be interested in knowing this. Especially the difference between the show car A and B finishes and why they would put less gas for some and add 3 gallons gas for others.

Due to fire codes many shows do not allow cars to have any fuel or at most a bare minimum before the fire inspector will sign off. I'm guessing that's what the "less gas" is for.

I think they may be sales codes charged to the customer. Show Car finish A or B as per listed price on a pricing schedule somewhere less the gas which is charged as extra and delivered to or picked up the customer with a full tank. Code Y97 no designation for the finish as it was the same treatment for the entire year only they charged for 3 gallons minimum of gas delivered to or picked up by the customer.

Y97 on a 1973 Challenger invoice, no mention of 'show car finish' & it is a Y14 car also, so not a 'show car'.

This one is also a Y14 car, so not a 'show' car'.

The codes I listed above are the correct Mopar option codes from 1969-1971.

I don't have anything for 1972 and later.

I'm just using it as a reference to help out OP question and everyone else who is interested in this Y9# business.

I did not post anything from earlier, just 1973 cars because that is what I have available so far?

I am still looking though.

Apparently some cars were delivered with a Y91 and Y92 show car finishes. I've found a few references to Superbirds, GTXs, Chargers etc.

Scroll down to the very bottom of the page after clicking on the link above to see where the Y codes are found on the broadcast sheet. Yeah I know, it's a 71 Super Bee. i'm still looking too.

I skipped over broadcast sheets & went to invoices because invoices offer a description (however brief) while broadcast sheets do not.

Here's what Dan at Chrysler said:

Show car aka y93 could have been a few things:
1. Extra care taken to dress overall appearance (exterior paint) interior trim/finish inspection
This tag could have showed up for a few reasons:
A. Dealer showroom floor model
B. Show circuit car
C. Press fleet car
D. Special order paint (maybe a way to limit/resolve orange peel)

I asked him about A, B & gas and am waiting on a response. I'll invite him to the party.
