I'm putting my shortblock together and installed and degreed my timing set. The bad news is I can't locate my crank oil slinger. I've heard that some use it and some don't. Looking for some 'expert' opinions. BTW this is a street motor (440) if that matters. Thanks.

I'd use it if you can find it. Helps gaurd against oil leakage at the crank seal and you know how irrating oil leaks are.

In 35+ years of taking apart B series engines,I have yet to see an original engine that has never been apart that didn't have one.

Same here. I have been around a very long time and have pulled plenty of originals apart at the yard. I don`t spend my time second guessing the engineers who designed these things so I always reinstall it.

Ok, However roller timing chain clearance is my concern. Those engineers were only concerned with the OEM stuff of the time.

All of my original 340s had double roller chains and they all have oil slingers.

You are right that most if not all bb engines had them but I have seem as many small blocks with them as with out. They are oil leak preventive for the most part and seals are much better quality now than in yester year.

Without it, the crank pulley alignment will be off ever so slightly.

I did a cam change some years back ...I misplaced the slinger ... put the TC cover back on without the slinger and it leaked like a Maggot Farmer !!

Now that you mention Mancini, I believe it was an MRE roller chain set that chewed up my oil slinger.

OK, I'm convinced, I'm going to put one back on. My son has a couple laying around his shop so I'll use one of his and replace it later.

If the chain touched the slinger then the slinger was installed backward...
