to make a long story short
i have this dana 60 housing i picked up dirt cheap
with a pile of other parts.
its supposed to of came out of a camaro race car
it has some honked up moved around perches
on it and ladder bar brackets welded to it.
the bom says it is a 69.5 - 72 b body 4.10
with a early 69 date code
end to end it is approx 55 inches long.
the perches on it seem to match up to a ebody perch width comparing it what i have.
the center pin holes on the perches seem larger then stock mopar ones
so i'm going to just cut them off and move them to begin with.

my question is would this rear be feasable to
stuff under a 71 b body?
the 71 8 3/4 rear i have is much a wider housing to begin with and i don't know if it will be a conflict with the housing being short
if i put the perches in the same width as the rear i have?

you can easily make up sleeves from a piece of pipe or tubing to take care of the rounded pin nub clearance. you will relocate the perches as needed. all that is left is the wheel offset (you said it is close) & #1 the condition of the gears/sure grip.

so as long as i put the perches in the 71 b location
i should be good to go but with just a different inward wheel offset?

and my next question is will i have to get different rims to fit the offset
or can i use the stock 390 wheels i have?

i was just hoping it might of been done before by someone
to save me some head scratching and figuring out..
i should probably just put the perches back at a stock 68-70 width and stuff it into a different car and call it a day..

i got some good info here by digging up a old thread
but it doesn't really answer my question
except that it would really fit well into a e body..

ok,i think from what i'm reading
a e body dana will fit into a 71 b body
a 68-70 b body dana will fit into a e body
but it won't fit a 71 b body
there is about a 3 inch difference between them
ok,so now i need to make a new game plan smile

The owner has had enough of the 8.75" that has cost him a lot of money in upgrades. I will post some pictures as we go along.

That chart sucks and should be burned at the internet stake. B 8.75 rears are NOT the same from 62-70... LOL

A 55" (54 15/16) flange to flange housing is going to be a 68-70 B rear.

The 8.75 lengths cross over to the Danas for each axle.

I have one here that I was told came from a 69 GTX but is like yours,I need to cut off some funky ladder bar mounts and weld perches back on it.

who is that guy?

I'm thinking the Dr Diff offset hanger kit would go great with that rear. http://www.doctordiff.com/71-72-b-body-offset-spring-hanger-shackle-kit.html

i'm going to have to talk to him
before i give up on the 71 b idea.
i have a fleet of junk 69-74 so i could always use it somewhere else if i have to.
this rear had ladder bar mounts and 2 sets of perches on it
it sorta looked funny
the outer perches are e body width 46 inch apart center to center
i already cut/ground off the goofy ladder bar brackets
(they were pretty thick!) and
one of the inner perches is gone and i started hacking away on the otherone
its starting to look like something now laugh2

Just a note of info, back in the day my Chevy friends would use a b-body dana 68-70 and shorten l/s tube I believe 2". Then use 2 right side axles. Fit perfect in a early Camaro and Nova. Make sure l/s tube is longer.

Grind off the old perches and do a mock-up on your 71...IIRC the mopar performance perches are the ones you DONT want... laugh2 They had that bigger center locating hole like the set you're taking off...As stated it's an easy fix just make up a spacer but why start with them if you can just get a better set...

Get the new perches, set them on the springs and install the dana on them...Bolt the U bolts but leave them loose until you measure your wheel openings to center the rear...Don't worry about the pinion angle at this point just check how the rear fits with the available spacings...A custom wheel offset is easy enough to do and you'll fill up the wheelwell much better in the process...

The troublespot is always the inside tire sidewall at the rear leaf section the front segment before the rear housing gets narrower so if the back segment clears the front will by design..

The '71-'74 B-body's 47.25" spring perch location does not facilitate a clean '68-'70 B-body housing swap by simply relocating the spring perches.

I recommend my '71-'72 B-body 1.25" offset spring hanger/shackle kit and a 10" wheel with 5" backspacing.

Turn the housing upside down, resting on jack-stands with a floor jack supporting the pinion. Adjust the floor jack to make the pinion point 4 degrees toward the ground. Level the new perches at 44.75" on center and weld.

This combination will bolt into any '71-'72 B-body and maintain the stock pinion angle. A Mickey Thompson Sportsman SR 28/12/15 street radial fits nicely.
