I've got some damers in my garae, how do I tell which belongs to a SB and which to a BB?

BB is painted the dirty small block one is from a 1970 340. The bolts holes are different from cast crank to steel crank.

The 318s were neutral, the 360s all were external balance. The timing marks are different from 273 to 1970 318s, 71-92 318s, 71-93 360s....The 350/383/400/413/426/440 used the same timing markfrom what I recall.

I was thinking that the timing marks are the same for '70 up small blocks (on dr side)

From what I remember the neck is longer from a small block

So, basically you can machine a BB damper out of a 318 damper? How long is the BB damper overall. I think the ones I have ae 318 dampers nd should get one for a 440 internal balance.

It's not a cast/forged thing, it was a year change in '72...all dampers went to a symmetric bolt pattern in '72. Early '72 340 crank was forged, went to cast midyear.

I think all the OEM BB dampeners from 1962 to 1980 have the raised retaining lip on them, all the SB I've seen and early hemi don't

I set my 318 truck dampener flat on the bench with a straightedge across the snout & it is 1 & 11/32 from under it down to the outer perimeter rim that you stick your timing tape to.

The same dimension on a BB is 21/32".
