Got a new egt monitor today, directions recommend installing sensors on the 2 hottest exhaust tubes at idle, are the front 2 usually the hottest? Not sure that's the best arrangement, in event something else is causing a cylinder being slightly lean. It seems the last time I tuned the temps varied lots.
Appreciate all input.

I would put one in #7 and look at the other side using either #4 or 6 if your using a single plane intake manifold. the reason I like monitoring #7 is it follow #5 by 90 crankshaft degrees so # 5 gets a big head start on the fuel and air from the single carb intake at WOT work

I put bungs in every pipe so I could have 2,,4,,,,or 8 egts.

But I have none,just o/2s

I was thinking the two most rear ones would be the hottest because they are the farthest from any form of cooling. Tim

Cooling system temps have little impact on EGT.

EGT will be all about air/fuel distribution of the intake manifold runners.

No cheap/easy way to determine where to place them unless the weakness of a particular intake is well known and documented. You could use a heat gun on suspected cylinder header tube but you would have to be doing pulls on a dyno while trying to take a reading which could be problematic.

I would love to datalog 8 EGTs but I wasn't in that mind set when I got my headers coated. It would be very handy to balance the cylinders since I have EFI. I guess eventually the shiny headers won't feel so new and I can weld some bungs into them lol.

They offer a clamp on style reader many use. I usually go by O2 readings but I finally welded two bungs (4 and 6) to get my feet wet this year

I have O2 sensor on the right side for my old LM-1, wish the 8 sensor EGT monitors weren't so pricey...This is on my street legal car, I have a single egt on my racecar but thought I'd see what I could learn from both on the street car. Thanks for all input up

Cab,
I just warmed engine up with no load about 1,800 rpm, 7 tubes were about 850 degrees F. but #5 was 999? It's raining outside and I'm home alone so can't really check with a load on it until I drill and install thermocouples...Car has Hooker SC headers so 6,7 & 8 aren't easily accessable for sensors?
what would you suggest?

I would really try to put one in #7 as I already suggested for those reasons, put the other one in the easiest one on the passenger side up If you wanted to pull the headers off the car and have bungs welded into all eight pipes you could move the probes around and see what they all show at part throttle and at WOT work Will your system EGT record and play back or transfer the stored information to a viewable device like a laptop?
I bought a LM1 years ago and use to record a run and then load it onto my laptop to replay the results on a bigger screen at my pleasure up

You can't tune a gas motor, ESPECIALLY at idle with EGTs. Plus what would you tune it to? I have stuff that runs at 1200 and stuff that runs at 1600. It's just a number

Cab,
I use the LM-1 with my laptop, the egt recorder will save the min and max temp and display it in real time, doesn't have any output for data logging though.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I'll try to get a sensor in #7.

I would want it more for cylinder balance than anything else. With pump gas and street driving plug reading is tough, and 8 EGT readings could let you see a potential fuel delivery problem before anything else. I can adjust injector trim per cylinder but its just kind of a guess without either 8 02s $$$$$$$$ or 8 EGT $$$ lol.

Agreed.

As someone suggested, you can always weld in 8 bungs and move the sensors about. In theory, in 4 WOT passes you would know which cylinders run lean.

Guys,
I was just trying to make a good choice on install since I only have 2 bungs (I will get 6 more)and want to use this Saturday for our last event of the season, and I wasn't tuning anything yet. I have used the afr in 1 car and another egt monitor in my racecar but thought it would be interesting to use both in my street legal car.
Thanks for all info.
