Been driving my 69 bee and have noticed at times the shifter was feeling funny. Was out today to get some gas, slowed down to turn corner and tried to shift into third and there was no way that it is going to go. Was able to get where I wanted to go and it's up on a lift but I am wondering what might be the problem. Where do we go from here? help

well,, it's up on a lift.

Is it the shifter that is jammed or the transmission?

It's the transmission. I just found out that there is a lot of brass floating around that it is coming from the first gear synchronizer. Looks like rebuild time. fan mad mad mad

I don't understand how a worn-out 1st synchro keep you from shifting 4-3? shruggy

Speaking of "on the side of the road wondering": Way back around '85, I had a similar feeling develop in my A-833 about 2 miles from home (at midnight with rain coming, of course). Finally it stuck "between" 3 & 4 and the car wouldn't move at all. Hiked home, drove back with a toolbox, got underneath and moved the shift arm to 4, N, 3... no resistance and the driveshaft stayed locked. Then of course the clouds opened up and within seconds I was lying in an inch of water. Gave up for the night!

Next day had it towed home, pulled the side cover, and found that the neck had snapped off the 3/4 shift fork. Popped in a new fork, back in business.

My 64 300's original shifter was very worn out when I bought, found out when I was at a friend's wedding reception, stuck in first. Turns out the forks in the shifter housing were so wore out it'd let the shifter handle slip in between them and hang up. So there I am in my dress blues unhanging my shifter so I can give a girl a ride home. I'm sure she was impressed.

I ended up putting an Indy shift in at a later time.

I'll know more later today when the tranny is removed and put on a bench to get a better look. From what I've been told there is a lot of brass in places it shouldn't be. There might be more damage to synchronizers that couldn't be seen on first inspection. I'm just glad I was real close to my mechanic's shop when this happened.

I had this happen to my Challenger, but 3rd gear. It broke the end off of one of the dogs in the synchronizer. The dog tilted up into the hollow area of the sleeve jamming it. The only parts needed were the dogs.

What does he mean by "there is a lot of brass in places it shouldn't be" ???

The brass is part of the syncro assemblies, the syncros are inside the transmission and in the oil ... the only oil source in the transmission by the way ... the oil circulates inside the ENTIRE transmission, the only place that it should not be is on the outside of the transmission ?????

running up my post count some more .

I've seen transmissions stuck in high before. What usually happens is the input shaft dog teeth will wear notches in the front of the 3-4 sleeve from the constant on/off the throttle, after a time the dog teeth on the input shaft will lock into the notches and will prevent the sleeve from disengaging the dog teeth.

Once had an 833 that would get stuck in 2nd, and moving the side cover a wee bit - can't move it much due to shouldered bolts - fixed that. Not much room for the forks & combs to work, and they can hang up on each other if the cover location is off just a little bit.
I'm assuming here that shifter's properly adjusted, no rod interference, and no damage to shifter, levers, or rods.

Bingo, this is exactly what has happened. 3-4 synchronizer is the brass that is in the transmission. Just got thru looking at it and it's the problem. I'll be calling Brewers in a couple days. violin
