Well some of these freshly machined parts are not quite
so fresh anymore, my fault, there is now a bit of rust.

Anyone use a brush-on goo type rust remover ? How about
a submerged bath type ?

I would try WD40 and a wire brush, several times until clean scope Once the major rust is gone try using ATF and then cleaning solvent to remove the ATF several times until it shines like new machining thumbs
If it is pitted bad enough that you can feel the pits with your finger nails your to late shruggy

Depending on how big the parts are (block or something more manageable?) Evaporust works great and no worry about scratching or marring the surface like with wire brushes, etc.

(I use it on vintage tools, and works great and no worry about hurting the fine stamped in writing, etc on them.)

For example...(and these were only soaked and then rinsed off, nothing else) WWII issue wrench handle after a soak;

And a 1927 extension after a few hours soaking...

I have a drum of a 6-1 water/molasses mix sitting outside my shop... works great for derusting everything from wheels to heads to blocks and everything in between.

A 40lb bag of dry molasses (animal feed) is about $18.00.... I mix a fresh batch every spring. 40 bs. lasts me three years.

I use my shop crane to lift heavy parts in and out of the drum. When the cold weather comes I simply dump the old stuff out into my driveway and wash it into the street... it's all natural so the greenies can't say a thing.

The acid in the vinegar will eat the rust, what's the lemon juice and salt supposed to do?

The lemon juice is acid too, salt, from what I understand helps mix the batch. I also have a molasses tank, made in June, so far works real good. I didn't know the batch life, thanks for that info. So far I've done four doors, three fenders, a hood, grill surround and bunch of small pieces, roof goes in next, very happy with results.

Here's my deal... the scum on top is a combo of rust and grease. The solution isn't a degreaser but it does loosen the grease and old paint.

These rocker arm shafts spent over 10 years outside on an engine without valve covers...

The springs are old stockers that will replace the broken one's in my dropped '97 Ram... the bracket is off my dirt late model quick change. Again it was very rusty after 20 years of storage.

The key to this solution is patience.... don't expect haevy rust to disappear in a day. Light 'shelf' rust will dissolve in a few days... heavy stuff may take weeks. just dip it and forget it.

I also use long gloves, the stink takes awhile to come off your hands or clothes. You're right it takes weeks for the heavy rust. AND it doesn't harm the metal, its a biological process.

Hey guys, thanks very much, good points all around !

Now, let me throw this in the mix. It occurred to me that
sandblasting with walnut shells might work. Two of my rusted
parts are a block and a crank.

Would you walnut blast the crank journals or the cylinder bores
(was freshly crosshatched) ?

EvapoRust is amazing stuff. Will not touch the base metal, and rust is completely gone after a 24 hour soak. Not cheap, though. To do an engine block, you would need to buy at least 5 gallons, which would cost about $100.

You can use vinegar. It's cheap, (about $3 or less per gallon) and bio friendly.
I used an old storage container, doing a resto job on an antique. about two days all rust was gone! The rinse with water and blow dry.
I dropped this old wheel (1968) in to see what it would do for it.
A little brushing will help.

I've had a lot of luck with EvapoRust. It's very safe and effective.

One product that no one has mentioned yet is Ospho. I don't know if I would spray it on machined surfaces like crank journals, but it does work fast at removing light surface rust. It's commonly used on automotive sheet metal.
