All the first gen HEMIs I've had apart have had factory installed hardened exhaust seats.
1957 Plymouth (Hemi, Dual Quads, A833 4 Speed 9 1/4 w 4.10) Sold 1937 Dodge Pickup (Hemi, 6X2 intake, 46RH, Dana 60 w 4.56) Sold 1968 Plymouth Valiant 2dr sedan (354 HEMI, 46RH w/4.30 gears)

The hardened seat is a separate piece that is pressed into the head (Upper seat in picture) instead of being ground directly into the head like the lower (intake) seat. It’s pretty easy to tell once you get the valves out. Speaking of valves most (all?) of the first gen HEMIs used sodium filled exhaust valves. Basically the valve was made in 2 pieces (head and stem) and welded together. Any pitting in the weld area just under the valve head pretty much renders the valve unsafe to use.

The factory parts catalog shows the exhaust seat (9-39-9) used up through the '58 392.
