My uncle has a fresh 440 that he will not be using in one of his projects. I may be swapping the 340 in my Barracuda for it. I have a 727 transmission in the car now. Will I be able to use the same transmission?

No. need big block case. I'd stuff a stroker small block in that black monster.

That was actually the original plan. The thing is that I can get this 440 from my uncle for a really great price, and it is completely rebuilt. It would cost alot less than doing a stroker small block. What do you guys think?

So now that I know I cant use this trans, do you guys think this would still be a good swap if I can get the right transmission and have it rebuilt?

Exhaust is your main issue. I'm building a demon right now for mostly racing and I have to figure headers out, and I'm NOT cutting into inner fenders. You could probably get some manifolds to work in your car if it's a basic 440. If I didn't have all the bb stuff already, I'd consider the big inch small block.

I'm doing this swap on a 74 soon.

Two things:

Go to the Schumacher website Engine swaps .com or something
And.....Check out Big Block Dart

That will get you started.

That and mounting. Youll either need some sort of conversion mounts, front motorplate, or a BB A body K frame. I know CPPA made under chassis headers, does Dougs or TTI? The oem BB exhaust manifolds are pricey and constrictive - more constrictive than any non-hp manifolds. You could cut holes in the federwells for headers, and save the cut outs if you decide to go back to stock, they could be welded back in.

Friend of mine has a BB A body K frame, pm me if youre interested.

I used to care but....... things have changed

(1)sell the 340 to me for cheap (2) conversion mtr mts is the best plan there (3) as mentioned ex is the most critical choice, definitely checkout www.bigblockdart.com & the max wedge repro exh manifolds might be a good option, good flow, less heat than headers, 3" outlet & dont forget TTI

In my opinion, you should stay SB. If you want more power, sell the 440 and use the money toward a 360 build or something. You'll have to change a LOT of details in the gorgeous little car, already all set up for a SB. Wiring, exhaust, possibly rad / rad mounts, on and on.

If you want big block, go for it. engine-swaps.com has your motor mounts and TTI has your headers. IIRC, the TTI headers will only clear for manual steering, not power steering, but check out their website to confirm. Kinda a waste of a small block 727 but if you're married to that trans you could cut the bell housing off of it and bolt on a jw ultrabell, although I would sooner buy a BB trans and rebuild it on the side so you could keep driving the car for a while yet. Then depending on your rad, if may or may not need an upgrade.

Getting a big block tranny case will be easy. The headers you need will be expensive.

Keep old mopars alive.

Thanks for your opinions. Does anyone know how complicated the wiring changes will be? Can I just buy an engine-forward harness and be done?

As for the radiator, it is a standard A body 22" upgraded to a 4 row.

With the trans, I will just pick up a BB 727 for it.

I am still on the fence about this whole thing. I wanted to do a 408 stroker but the deal on this 440 is sweet.

Once you get the 440 in, your doubts will be gone.

Putting a big block in an A body isn't exactly a new frontier.

Lot's of mounts available
some info at big block dart.com too.

The wiring changes are very minimal. The alternator, oil, temp senders are almost all in the same spots.

Depending on coil mouning, the coil +/- , and the points wire (or dist pu leads) are really your only wiring mods.

There are no real wiring changes. Just need to lengthen/shorten a few wires for stuff like the distributor pickup, etc. Your rad will probably be fine if it's decent.

We put this 400 in my boys Dart and it was actually not hard at all. We used 2" CPPA chassis headers and a bigblock A-body K-frame that I had. It still has the original 318 AC radiator that we added a row to and it cools great never running over 190 even in 95 degree summer days. As was said the wiring was simple as I just lenthed the harness where needed and it already had stock electronic ign. Plugs are not bad at all just change them when the eng is cold. His is just a mild 400 running mid 11's in his Dart street car so you will love the 440 in your Cuda ! Ron
