Just installed a MP electronic ignition on a 383. I'm using a Blaster II coil. Do I or don't I use the ballast resister?

i would use the ballast resistor.

i bypassed the ballast on my truck using ignition coils that are supposed to be "internally resisted" and i just ended up with overheated coil...

Same setup using chrome box. Using MSD resistor I believe. Ten years still kicking.

X2, the orange box is problematic enough the way it is. However you have ALOT of leeway on what you can or cannot use/get by with. I dont think you would notice the gain (WO one) but it would greatly increase the chance of a much earlier failure (WO one) (usually at the most inopportune time-Mr Murphy). I'd carry a spare box no matter what.

Oh yeah, spare box is in the trunk along with a spare resistor

MSD Blaster II Coil Resistor - 0.8 Ohms

Mopar Performance Makes A 1.0 Ohm Resistor And A 0.25 Ohm Resistor

Why Do We Run A Resistor With A Blaster II Coil And Mopar Electronic Ignition

Because Someone Told Me I Should

Or Because It Looks More FACTORY Running A Resistor And I Have These Wires That I Don't Know What To Do With If I Remove It

I Removed The Resistor Itself Within The Ceramic/Porcelain
Material And Replaced It With A Straight Wire Because

Even Though My 71 Bee Of Course Never Left The Factory With Electronic Ignition To Begin With - Kind Of A Oxymoron

Anyways

Blaster II Coil Painted Black , Mounted Horizontal In The Factory Bracket - Mopar Performance Chrome ECU And Straight Wire Modified Ballast Resistor

Running Strong For A Billion Years

'Just installed a MP electronic ignition on a 383'. this upgrade comes with the orange box. it was assumed the OP was referring to the orange box and not the chrome.

I agree with Mike, the chrome box will tolerate straight thru way better than the orange box will tho you have ALOT of leeway on what you can and cannot get by with. In '83 I used an Accell super coil, the big yellow beast with an HEI module (75 chebby OE black one/VG piece) with the std Mopar electronic dist with NO ballast on a 440 & it was a killer setup/no failure. (Accel later told me to use either a .7 or .8 ohm ballast on it dont remember exactly). YMMV!
