I can understand the rules, and certain thing's, but they were plenty of things they could have done differently and still be within the rules. Is anyone else think they should have went more lift on the cam, touch more duration, bigger chamber in this case for better piston design, longer connecting rods, different intake manifold, more bore, different direction on head ports, especially helping that exhaust port out, and many more thing's to list. Very trick piece overall though. Let's hear your opinions.

In my opinion a lot of the engine master guys leave things on the table because they are entering an engine that is not built specially for the challenge, just something they thought would be fun to show case. That is the only way I can explain certain things I see in the contest, engines built to peak way past the cutoff RPM, not maxing out compression or quench or... tons of things, the winners/runners up do everything to win, maybe the firs 5 places, the others apear to just show up with an engine that is a hoge-podge of whatever is laying around the shop.
I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

Yeah that particular engine, de-bored? HUh? Lets shroud the valves (in a mopar BB with crappy valve placement already) more and see if it makes more hp!
As for testing the windows, simple test it, pull the window cavern thingys and put a flat plate blocker back on it and test again.
I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

Hollis Page (HP Engines), Larry Smith (30 year NASCAR Head porter and Engine builder) and I are talking about teaming up for the 2016 EMC in the small block class using an R3 based block. Thumbs up!!

That is some very "Smokey Yunick-esque" rule interpretation there. Didnt they build a 361 B based engine a couple years back too?

Remember the goal is to make the most from 3000 to 6500, yes the heads and such can be made to put down way more hp but it would be at the top, scores are calculated from torque and hp. So they no longer factor in price of build like they used to?

Very trick piece overall though. Let's hear your opinions. The name of the game is small bore/big stroke and forget peak power its all about the average, oh and try to stay around 400 cubes. Check out Kaase's 404 cube Boss, had a 3.695" bore x 4.700" stroke but benefitted from the Hemi heads obviously. As far as doing things differently of course there are tons of things to try and do differently but these things take $$$ and time. October comes up pretty fast for the average shop and I am an average shop. Jump in and give it a try. J.Rob

Most of these engines make great power on the dyno but would never run the number at the track. That would be a real challenge. Run them on the dyno then put them in cars and run them. There is a member here that has a 318 build that was used in the EMC 2010 contest that runs quite well. Also our 2009 471 engine which made 683 hp on our dyno with a single 4150 went into a customers Pro-touring '69 Charger and put down 587 HP at the hubs--runs slow at the track though with no 60' and a TKO tranny that you cant grab 3rd with--runs mid 11's @ some stupid MPH. Also might ask Brett Miller also a member here what his 2011 EMC engine ran at the track in his car. J.Rob

I would like to see dyno numbers before and after the windows in the block. To see if it made a difference. Working on it for Spec Bigblock class this year, I want to know too. J.Rob

I am going to guess a lot of these parts weren't just laying around. It just seems to me that this motor is way more trick then it needs to be to make that kind of power. The intake flow on the heads dictate it should be making over 700 hp. I'm sure a lot of it was lost trying to make as much torque as possible with different parts limiting hp out put, but it seems to me with some changes it could have made the torque, and made the hp it should have. That's great that they pulled off the Windows in the block, but I don't think that was needed, better parts matching was needed more. The cross section of the port was 2.850" which was the target for maximum torque over the entire RPM range. I could have installed a larger cam and come very close to 700hp or more but the score would have sucked. I could have executed the port work better and should have spent way more time on the headers. I also burned up too much time on the EFI when the carb scored better. Its always the goal to make "the HP" along with "the TQ" but actually doing it is something else all together. J.Rob
