Regarding a topic I noticed earlier one day here, about someone noticing some ugly casting flesh besides a lobe, I did some searching on the net about this.

I noticed some Eurocar (VW/BMW) camshafts have nice chamfered lobes, while most, pretty much all US camshafts have sharp lobe edges.

Of course millions of cams never had any issues. But anyone see any benefit to this and ever carefully chamfered the lobes on a flat tappet camshaft before break in, for added security to prevent wiping a lobe/digging into a lifter?

Racer Brown has always made his lobes and in between Nice like that--me likey
I have had some Comps that would scare you to death with all the casting crud on them--sure thing nobody looked at them or cared--does it matter? Maybe not but...get a Racer Brown in your hands and you can just see the workmanship/ detail/ and IMO quality of overall product Cam Motion also details cams --speaks to the overall quality IMO

The above picture was mainly used as a nice example of chamfered lobes, but the cam in the pic is from a 2005ish VW/Audi TDI engine.

I've seen camshafts out of a Roll Royce car engine and one out of a Rolls Royce Merlin WW2 aircaft engine that look like the one in your picture up bow No unmachine surface in view grin
I've also ran a bunch of flat tappet cams that look like stock production OEM cams that never had a problem at all shruggy I've had more than one after market flat tappet junky looking Hi Po cam go flat also work
Your choice on detailing it confused

No digging in on the sides is possible unless your lifter geometry is waaaaay off. If anything is going to be digging in it would be the leading edge of the lifter which should be very nearly in the center of the lobe, just moved over slightly because of the lobe taper and lifter crown.

They look nice and does show quality.. but is it
needed.. I dont think so... I have never wiped a
lobe out(95% rollers)... now I probably just cut
my throat saying that... those little casting chunks
would hold oil(in between the lobes) but none of that
is needed there... maybe(I dont know)they can throw off
oil to the lifter bottoms shruggy

I was getting some proto cams made by LSM, for a DOHC application, and the slider follower would on occasion kick out and get chewed up. I took a small diamond hone to the edges, not to help with the issue, but to decrease the number of cuts on my hands from handling them...
